I was actually thinking how cool it would be to do this or Castlevania. Finally got the updates installed and played the first level. I take it I have to beat the single player part before I can really do anything with the game?

It helps, you'll find a lot of textures and objects you can use in the editor. The basic building blocks can mostly be had by just going into the editor and doing the little instructional tutorials, though. And it's simple enough to just apply any texture or objects you find later onto something you've already made anyway.
