Thread: The Princess and the Frog

  1. I'm seeing it tomorrow I think.

  2. I'm interested in impressions!

  3. I SAW IT.

    TWICE.

It's very, VERY good. The movie has an incredible personality that dwarfs the majority of the waning, pre-Lassater era of Disney animation. It feels like every character, regardless of priority, got some love. I found myself picking out background characters that I wanted to see more of!

Overall, it felt like the movie's pacing was a bit fast, though. Doesn't get in the way of it being a FUN CARTOON, though.

Also, found an easter egg I don't think anyone's noticed yet. In the first high shot of the streets on New Orleans after Tiana sets off for Duke's, someone is waving Magic Carpet out the window.

  4. Fast pacing is kind of necessary for a kid's movie. If you look at some of the old disney movies they're ridiculously short. Dumbo is barely over an hour.

I want to see this, but I'd feel like a creep going to watch this by myself and I don't think it's the kind of thing I could drag anyone else to.

Just got back from it. It is damn good. It deals with white/black southerners and the time period the movie takes place in, maturely. The movie does not white wash the past, nor does it make those topics so overt that the movie is ruined for kids.

It brings both classic and modern cartoon staples to the table. It is all there. Your basic 3.5 Disney songs are there. Princess/prince love store is there. BUT they also go back as far as Betty boop and throw in some cab callaway period stuff and some classic cartoon slapstick.

WAIT, THERE IS MORE! There is also some subtle social commentary about black people of the time having to work extra hard to achieve their goals AND a little bit of commentary on the current problem of hard working black women dating lazy black men.

Go see the movie. It is good. You will enjoy it.

    my only gripe is:

Like many Disney movies, it reinforces the whole "princess" mentality in young girls. The main character is a hard working woman, and yet her life is not fixed until she gets her "prince." This message is hit home pretty hard. There is a song about what she "needs" which ends up being the prince. They even make fun of her when she claims that what she needs is to work even harder to achieve her goals. And she doesn't get the business she wants until the man she marries helps her buy it. For this reason the movie kind of has a weird moral. It tells young men to not be lazy asses, but it tells young women that even if you work really hard to get what you want, you still need a man to help you get it.

But I'm not shocked by this. Disney is ran by some of the same people who run Lifetime now. So it is kind of expected for their to be a love story that ends with the woman getting the business she wants and the perfect guy. Plus, Disney has been doing the princess shit for far to long. Way to much money to be made, so why change now?

I've heard there are like 5 easter eggs in the movie like this.

I saw this tonight and really liked it. Surprised how great it really was. Not the greatest Disney cartoon ever, but it certainly beats the shit out of crap like Hunchback, Pokeahotass, Tarzan, Hercules, etc.

The sidekick characters were pretty awesome, and Tiana's best friend was one of the greatest disney characters in a long time. That girl was pure funny/charming. Even the prince was awesome.

My only complain was the somewhat stupid ending. That musical scene was just sort of dumb.

    GET D'EM FROGS!

  9. I guess I'm going to be the odd man out here. I saw it tonight and I thought it was alright but I wasn't blown away by it or anything. I honestly thought some of the secondary characters were a lot more interesting than Tianna and the Prince. Ray, Charlotte and The Shadowman were all awesome, and felt so much richer to me. I just felt like the Prince and Tianna were very flat. I also thought there were too many songs, it almost seemed like every character had a song to sing for no reason. I like musicals but I like musicals where they transition into the song with a nice flow. A lot of times I felt like the songs came out of no where.

Like I said I thought it was alright just nothing great or wow. Don't get me wrong the animation was awesome, just the story and the main characters felt weak.
