I'm not fronting anything, there are plenty of people who have scored shitty music for movies and have been nominated for an Oscar just because it's catchy enough that people remembered it when it was time to guess what the best score of the year was. At least people had enough sense that he didn't win an Oscar. BUT HIS UNCLE WON 9.
If you're only problem is with his voice (which I like, but I get why it's not for everyone) then why would you care when he's involved with a project where he won't be singing?

You should check out Faust. Amazing concept album he did that's a lot of guest singers like James Taylor, Bonnie Rait, Elton John, Don Henley, etc.

  2. IMHO the thing that hurt 2D animation was the fact that every single one had to be a fucking musical. There was some unwritten law that if you were doing a 2D animated feature it had to be a musical, with a hero song, the bad guy song, etc etc. I think people just got really sick and tired of it. Disney, and others started to play out that style just way to much. Fairly tale musicals just don't really sell in the market any more.

  3. I think it was too many musicals with awful Alan Menkin soundtracks in particular.

The main thing that killed 2D is really just that 3D is cheaper, easier, and consistently draws audiences, if we're being honest.

2D was dead long before 3D became big. It also has nothing to do with 3D being cheaper/easier, because that isn't the case at all. If you look at the size of the average 3D feature film production it dwarfs that of I'd wager just about any 2D feature film. The reason 3D can draw audiences more effectively is because it wasn't effected by that unwritten law of every animated feature has to be a musical, and people were telling different stories.

Look at something like Finding Nemo, it was very different from Toy Story, A Bug's Life, or Shrek. It was also a very adult story, it touched on some really fucking serious subject matters. When was the last time a 2D animated feature did that?

I think its fucking awesome that Disney is going back to its 2D roots, but its telling another damn fairy tale musical. Its time to try something new, something different.

    *edit*

Also 3D films don't consistently pull in audiences. Over the Hedge was the best animated feature the year it was released IMHO, and it didn't do all that great. Plenty of both good and bad 3D films haven't done great.

Then how come people watch the same fucking 3D movie with zany pop culture references for the parents and sassy talking animals for the kids over and fucking over again? You give people way too much credit.

  6. Not to mention the annoying 'buddy movie' format with a laid-back character and a high-strung character. I was so glad Pixar dropped that shit with Incredibles... then Cars and to a lesser extent Ratatouille brought it right back.

  7. Also, bear in mind the fairy tale musical thing wasn't some fad they burnt out, they kept it going for literally 50-60 years.

You named Shrek there, and each one I believe has done worse than the previous one in the Box Office. Really other than the Dreamworks stuff, I can't think off the top of my head of many 3D movies that are over run with pop culture references. Plus Dreamworks seems to have gotten a shit load better at it, Shrek 1 - 3, and Shark Tales are really their worse offenders with that.

I don't know if I would say they kept it going for 50 - 60 years. Yeah they made those kinds of films for 50 - 60 years, but the studio was losing money for a good 20+ of those years on them. Quite a few people feel that the studios worst period was after Walt died and after Jungle Book, because everyone kept saying "Well what would Walt do?" except they all got it wrong and kept doing the same thing, where as Walt liked to push and try new things. The studio stayed in business because it had other sources of income, but man Eisner really wanted to close down the studio really badly cause of how the movies were doing.

I just look at the fact that 3D is taking more risks overall (not every single 3d movie but as a grander picture) than 2D did in the last 20 years overall. What was the last 2D film that touched on such a serious subject matter in such a powerful way? Bambi? Look at Wall-E there's only a few minutes of voice acting in the entire movie. Thats it, to me that's a pretty fucking ballsy move.

  9. To be fair, everything on Wall-E I've seen so far looks like a fucking dog.

Do you mean the robot himself looks like a dog or that the movie looks like shit?
