how?
No it's not. The 1950's Thing had very little to do with the novel it was based on ("Who Goes There?"). John Carpenter's version was less of a remake and more of an attempt at actually faithfully adapting the novel.
Aside from that, back in the 80's Hollywood wasn't out of their minds with remake fever. On the rare occasion that a movie was remade back then, it was a big deal and the remake was usually radically different than the original. Scarface is another example.

If this is a remake then they are going to have a hell of a time landing on the highest point in New York again.

I heard last week they've been planning on doing a new version of "The Warriors" since 2002, and now it's finally going into production.
The only way this movie would work is if they set it in the alternate future 70's or 80's, and it would look exactly like the original anyway so why bother?

I'm glad they're doing these remakes. Seems like an easy way to make a quick buck off of a sheepish movie-going population without having to exert a lot of unnecessary cost in R&D. This is a business guys, not a charity.
