Speaking of 1987, Maze of Gallious might deserve a mention. It gets overshadowed by Wonderboy in Monster Land, but it was a really open-ended game for the time.

Dizzy from Codemasters (1987) - Spectrum (below).

He had maybe ten sequels before 1993 on every major system between Spectrum and Megadrive/Genesis (below).

No sign of another sequel that I can see since about 1993.

After Burner Climax is the jones. However I don't think I'd buy it on a console because it's too simple and well, the cab really makes the game.

1987: Double Dragon hit the arcades that year to major success. It kickstarted popularity in the beat 'em up genre.

2007: There haven't been new ones announced but it wasn't that long ago that the GBA had that remake.

An XBLA version is coming out very soon. Online co-op is going to be awesome.

Planet Harriers came out in 2001? Wow that long ago.... I wish there is a home port, maybe like a Space Harrier collection or something.

Put it on XBLA. Perfect fit, especially with online leaderboards.

Bubble-Bobble was released on C-64, Amiga, Atari ST and several other formats in 1987.

Alex Kidd: BMX Trial needs to be released on VC. It's fun with an emulator and a mouse, but the Wiimote would work perfectly.
