Thread: PSP Price Drop?

  1. As much as I want one I think it would be smart to wait to see where they go with the new model.

  2. You couldn't pay me to take first gen Sony hardware. I'll wait for the redesign to get all the new kinks out of it that it introduces and then maybe consider getting one.

Then again, I think those that buy the system only to never touch it for fear of losing their homebrew and emulators, yet complain that they never play it anyway, are just as bad.

PSP is a fantastic handheld. It has a large assortment of fantastic video games, which do not require to you to irrationally hate your investment.
The controls and ghosting get in the way of truly enjoying games and even emulators. As a PSP owner I recommend everyone wait for a better model.

As a PSP owner I'd like to say that this is straight-up BS. The ghosting and controls have never damaged my enjoyment of Wipeout, Maverick Hunter X, Exit, GGXX#R or / (controls absolutely perfectly, YES, REALLY), Ys VI, or a number of other games, emulated and otherwise. I have watched video off of the Memory Stick and enjoyed it. You're all either insane, or ridiculously fickle. Or both.

    RDM Andy has spoken.

    Concurage.

My disdain for Sony is well known on this board, but I will shamelessly shill for them regarding the PSP. Well, I guess it's not "shilling" since I really believe it's a great product. The LCD's sucky response time is a legitimate issue, but hardly a deal breaker. Load times are occasionally out of control, and in most need of correction with the inevitable redesign. I've never had a problem with the directional buttons.

Overall, the current-gen PSP is a marvel and easily gives my DS a run for its money as far as time spent and enjoyment had.

Ghosting never bothered me. The shitty control pad does bother me, and the analog nub is horrid for accuracy (Sniping was very difficult in GTA). I lived with it but those should be improved in the next revision. Still, there are so many games worth playing that I can't complain too much.

  8. The PSP's library has gone from sucktastic in year one to excellent at this point. It's a system worth owning, no question. But if Sony's got a redesign on the way, this price drop isn't worth it. If they're just clearing out stock in anticipation of PSPv2.0, it's best to hold on a bit longer.

Despite it's issues (3D games with one analog stick, slightly underpowered for good 3D performance, disk-based media) the PSP is a great system. I have a hard time believing anyone's arguing otherwise by now.

  9. Until they fix the ghosting and control issues $170 is way too much.
    Backloggery
    GameTZ

Go home and be a family man.

  10. Loading is definitely an issue. It hurt Ys VI a lot, and that's all I can say I really think needs improvement. Internal memory would kick ass, too.

I agree about the analog nub, it's a good idea that just doesn't work that well the way Sony implemented it. Of course, anything other than the clicky NGP thumbstick is going to disappoint me on a portable now, but I have no qualms with the DS or DS lite d-pads. Hell, I haven't had any trouble with the PSP one, either. I was able to complete the annoying jumping sections of Ys VI without much trouble (well, no more trouble than on PS2 or PC, anyway), and the GG games play very well. I think a lot of that's on the developer. Spectral vs. Generation is nowhere near as tight as GG in terms of control... or in any part of the game. That said, it definitely is possible to get good control out of PSP, even if Capcom didn't on Darkstalkers or whatever people are still clinging to.

Still, I maintain that PSP is an excellent system, and anyone who thinks otherwise has not spent enough time with one or is not using it to the fullest. Too bad.
