Thread: Frame Rate is King

    Frame Rate is King

To quote a producer at Monolith, "Frame rate is king".

Personally, I think we should have a 60fps standard now. If a game doesn't run at 60 frames they should lower the graphic detail until it does or at least give that option in the menus. Frame rate highly affects playability, not just looks. 30fps is still very playable but it's certainly not ideal.

    What do you think?

  2. I think 30fps is fine.

If a game dips to 30fps, the trouble comes from the developers programming it for 60. Unless speed is important(racers and what not), 30 fps is fine.

    yup yup.

letting the user modify things to fit their preferences is also always good, as well.

  3. Ala tweaking graphics options in PC games. I like it.

  4. Unless the game is extremely slow or choppy, I never complain about frame rates.

  5. 60 FPS is really great and all, but i have no problem what so ever if a game runs at 30 FPS as long as it stays locked at 30 FPS.

  6. If there's anything that dissapoints me about next-gen systems, it's that they aren't all rock-sold 60. Chunkalicious frame-rates drove me nuts on PS. On the other hand, games like PSO and Shenmue looked incredible without running at 60, so I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

Speaking of PSO and Shenmue, the blurriness caused by their frame rates has not ceased bothering me. It didn't ruin the games or anything but it makes me hope future versions are smoother.

I completely, TOTALLY 100% agree. It's just hard for me to be impressed by anything at 30fps because the entire time I'm just thinking how nice or how much better it would look if it were just at 60fps. And in this generation damn near everything SHOULD be 60fps. I mean, 30fps was pretty much the norm standard for most decent games last generation...(although some good ones squeaked out at 20-24fps). I've not seen anything yet that looks SO GOD DAMN GOOD that it could only be done at 30fps.

ya but oh god just think how sweet those games would look at 60!! There'd be like, NOTHING to complain about!

  10. I think it has an impact on all games, but the impact on games that aren't fast-paced or require split-second timing, is minor. It still effects the overall feel. For instance, if I play DOA2 or JSR now, they seem sluggish in comparison to their 60FPS sequels and it takes me some time to adjust. I think a game like Rayman 2, however, a difference of framerate wouldn't have much (if any) impact on playablity.

But I do think that any new game running at only 30FPS is a result of laziness. There's no reason why it shouldn't be able to push 60FPS if very busy games like JSRF can do it.
