Thread: The News Thread

  1. The News Thread

This thread is for all current events that are taking place as I write. I figure it's about damn time TNL has a dedicated news thread in General Discussion where members can go and read the daily events unfolding around the globe.

This thread has the potential to become confusing so I'm going to try my best to keep things organized. Every day I'll post a few bits of news that I feel are important for the public to know. I'll pull them all from the Times pretty much but it's the only paper I read religiously. I will also try and post important breaking news if I can.

Discussions of the day's events can occur but I want to keep all the bullshit arguments out of the thread because it can confuse readers. I know it will eventually happen but it's just wishful thinking.

Any member can post news they deem worthy but I don't want this thread to have silly news. I want people to use this thread to keep up-to-date and fill their lives with at least a small amount of news. If you're going to do this please provide a link and a summary or the entire article.

WARNING: I may link to articles that are several pages long and you will need a membership to that newspaper's online site. They're free so you can just make a dupe e-mail account.

1.Freed Britons May Sell Their Stories, Drawing Criticism
Two days after they were paraded as heroes with a story to tell, some of the 15 British sailors and marines captured and released by Iran seemed today to have decided they have a story to sell.
2.Iraq Confronts Hussein Legacy Cast in Bronze
He was ousted, captured, tried and executed. But while the dictator may be gone, his legacy visibly lives on.
    3. Congress Seeks Compromise on Generic Drugs
Senior members of Congress from both parties are working feverishly on legislation that could give consumers access to lower-cost copies of biotechnology drugs that now cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
Depending on how much I have to write for my city's paper, I will try and give 3-20 stories per day.

  7. Most major stories, which offers room for debate, get their own topic sooner or later. But I'm a news junkie myself (30+ papers a day), so I salute your idea.

  8. Migrant workers hold LA protest
Thousands of people have demonstrated in Los Angeles to demand citizenship rights for illegal immigrants.

Gingrich says Gonzales should consider resigning
Joining a growing list of Republicans, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said today that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should consider resigning. The possible presidential candidate said the botched firing of U.S. attorneys has destroyed Gonzales' credibility as the nation's top law enforcer.
