They're just story dirven level up fests, and they aren't fun as games. The stories are overrated as well. They're hailed as the "best" because of all the big epic over dramatized crap, but few of them really do much for me because the characters are so 1 dimensional. FF3 (the japanese, NES one) was good for its day and had the cool job system, and FF5 had an even cooler version of it which made it playable, but all in all I really haven't been able to enjoy them. They're the opposit of everything I want in an RPG.

I look for depth, gameplay, and character depth and development in an RPG, so I love Tri-Ace and hate most of square's works.

    FF1: Indistinct and mediocre
FF2: Incompotent and unplayable, probably the worst RPG ever.
FF3: One of the better 8 bit RPGs
FF4: Story driven level up fest, relatively good characters somewhat redeem.
FF5: Story driven level up fest with a cool job system, cliched villain and flat characters
FF6: Dumbed down simplified FF5, in which most of the plot is wholly irrelevant, the characters are just "Guy with an accent and a background story", and another cliched muhahaha shouting villain.
FF7: Linear, bland, and unplayable crap with no gameplay, and obnoxious melodrama.
    FF8: FF7, but worse.

A good RPG needs a good battle system, good levleing/magic system, characters with some genuine depth, and some originality. None of this can be found in FF. Some of them barely seem like games. Just a story with some tedious interaction. If the gameplay isn't fun I don't want it.
    You are way too jaded.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

FFX is FFVIII, no matter how much some of the fans of FFX will try to argue otherwise.
But a lot of people make similar claims about FF7 and FF9, both of which I think have some of the best stories in any games ever.
Bad choices IMO, as those are both insanely simplistic and derivitive stories. The main difference is that I felt FFIX also had some great characters, very good writing and environments, much better character interaction, and a better soundtrack. Which all lead to it being my favorite FF.

  3. You see a building with doors. Is that a real building with a door you can walk through, or is it just part of the decorational background? Well, you've got no choice but to walk there and see. There's no intuitiveness about it. Sometimes you'll be able to walk thru the door, and other times you'll be hitting a "wall".

And maybe you have a propensity to compare every RPG with FFVII, since it's your favorite game? Those two thought processes are very valid reasons as to why you think what you do about Star Ocean. But I could be wrong.
Six months later, but I'll respond anyways.

No, I never thought "how dare they," it just seemed like a FF7 imitation in many ways. But I don't knock any game for being an imitation, especially of a game I really like. Comparing every RPG with FF7? No, I like a handful of RPGs that are quite different than FF7.

  4. I like em all even 8.
But XI looks stupid. I got bored watching the trailer.
Crystal Chronicle will be my next FF game
All this fighting. Over toys and games?

  5. i like the ff games. i liked the older ones more. i liked 7. didn't like 8. loved 9. haven't played 10. not sure i want to play 11. looking forward to gamecube version and re-releases of part 1 and 2 on the ps1.

  6. I love the FF series, and i'll fight for it til the day I die. Sure, some of it is weird, or glitchy, or angsty....but it's what made me the gamer i am today. FF7 still reigns as my fav game ever, no matter what anyone says about it being overrated, or stupid.
Granted, FF8 and 9 were mediocre, but the endings still brought tears to my eyes. FFX was a masterpiece, visually and story wise.

I imagine I'll like X-2. I'm still having a hard time swollowing the whole online thing of XI....but i will give it a try.

Well, some people are always going down on the whole online thing because they think it sucks like a vacuum. Honestly, a proper technique is required when producing such entities, although some companies just let whatever spurt out. This usually comes from improper use of head, and FFXI looks to be travelling down a dark hole, despite Square's want to keep a good grip on the whole thing.

  10. haha, I was going to reply with my thoughts on the series, but a little voice in my brain said "Hey, idiot! You'd better check this topic to make sure you didn't already post your opinions. After all, this is 6 months old, and your memory is shite nowadays so..."
I interrupted the self-destructive voice and skimmed through the topic, and sure enough, on page 2, is my post.

Since I'm currently finishing up FFV (levelling my characters to tackle Omega and Shinryu), I will say that it's a charming little game. Not very ambitious, but as a video game, it does its job well. The story and characters suck, but who cares? The job system makes up for lack of plot, I think. Reminds me a bit of Dragon Quest/Warrior games (more of a video game, less of an "interactive movie"). FFV is basically DQ/W with a better battle system. It's more game than story, just like VIII. Speaking of VIII, I'd like to play that one again, but then I remember how much work it took to get my characters to "godly" status and how utterly excruciating it was to have to endure the story to progress in the game, to which I say "no thanks".

FFIX was erm... I dunno. It's been almost 2 years since I last put it in my PS1. I can honestly say that the game was quite forgettable, except for the side-quests and stuff.
