You played FF8 for 86 hours? *shudders*
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

Didn't drag it down, but the battle system was also not the problem in FFVIII anyway.
Simplistic? Dude, FF VII's story is alot of things, but simplistic it ain't, especially for a videogame.
For most games, yes, and it certainly has a better story and characters than Grandia Xtreme. However, it was probably the most predictable FF (tied with FFIX) aside from the first (obviously), except I never cared about any of the characters. Except Sephiroth, who really needed to slaughter more people, preferably on the level of Id (my favorite Squaresoft bad guy). So how about "Insanely predictable" instead of simplistic?

I'm sorry, I have this problem with stories where the writing never captures anything for me and I can see every (or almost every) plot point a million miles off. Just having great or imaginative writing and/or wonderful characters can completely negate the story aspect, but FFVII didn't do that for me.

But enough of that. For those wondering and wishing to persue this, I'm sure there are plenty of threads buried in here going at length about said subject. Mainly because I've participated in quite a few of them, so please use the Search command.

I played through it twice. Fun battle system.

  3. Reading this page I saw alot of things that I felt that I could argue, but its all been done sooo many times before I couldn't even muster the strength.

I'll just say again: I loved FF8, the battle system was great if you spent the time to really "learn" it. People that say that all the battles consisted of were summons didn't dig deep enough. Half way through the game I never used summons because all of my characters spells and especially attacks did so much more damage, and so much quicker it wasn't even funny.

I also really didn't "click" with FF9. I wanted to love it, but everything I get 15 hours or so in I just lose intrest.

    I also loved FFX...

  4. Aw, how could you not love IX? That cool title screen track, the overworld music...I will say the plot really picks up around the 17-19 hour mark. It isn't anything mind-boggingly original, but it's charming, y'know?

  5. Honestly I really don't know why I didn't like it.

I'm a huge FF fan, and the 16bit stuff is my fave.

So seeing previews of 9 before it came out with the return to all the classic themes really had me excited.

But when I finally played the game...*shrugs* I really don't know.

I've tried to finish it three times, and each time get no further than 20hours in...

  6. My boyfriend and I were talking about the whole FF series for a good two hours last night, and it made me realize how much this series means to me personally. I know that people bash the sometimes lame lines (i.e. ".......whatever", "that guy are sick!" ;D ) and the occasional fantastical plot...but the characters in FF are like (as pathetic as this sounds) best friends. You get to know them, you grow and change, and you help them make things right. By the time I reach an end of an FF, i feel like I've just sent a good friend away on a planeride, and i wont see him again for another few years, and I cry heavily because of it ;_;
The one thing that i think FFs have done right, more than story or graphics or whatever, is the characters. These are people you know, or could know, and they happen to wear badass clothes.

Matter of fact, I don't see how one could not understand it, seeing as how they took careful time to spell everything out in basic terms. 99% of which was basic to begin with. Combine that with all of the characters being basic archtypes, it lead to a pretty unsurprising and unmoving story in every aspect.

And when did it really act wierd or psychadelic?
Umm, first off, FF7's entire story was full of it being psychedelic, what with flashbacks, alternate personalities, unclear dialogue, and a LOT of plot points that you really have to wait and concentrate to understand until things come together. I will give you the predicatablity thing; I personally didn't think it was predictable, but a lot of people say they could see things coming so to some people I suppose that is true. But it is anything but basic, and if you thought so, you didn't really get it.

Wrong, so very wrong. Juction is strength; time and levels mean nothing in that game.
I know. You misunderstood me, but basically that is exactly what I was saying.
    Yes.

Lessee... one character has an alternate personality (if you can call it that, some just refer to it as Squall ) and flashbacks have been used heavily in every form of media and writing since fiction was invented. "Unclear dialogue?" The hell is that supposed to do with anything? And none of the plot points needed to be concentrated on to catch onto, I'm not sure what you're even talking about anymore. What needed concentration, can I have an example?

Yeah, so what does that have to do with anything you listed?

So you're complaining because in order for characters to become more powerful they need to find more powerful things to Junction, instead of simply leveling up?

I'm actually thinking I should give this game another chance. I didn't exactly play it under ideal conditions the first time.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  10. I'm thinking I'm sad no one seemed to notice my pun that I actually sorta worked on. Ah well.
