Thread: star ocean 2nd story

  1. star ocean 2nd story

since there seem to be allot of rpg threads rollin' around i thought i'd jump on the bandwagon.

i love this game. yeah, yeah i know the voices suck....woulda been cool to have the voiceacting cast from valkyrie profile on this game but oh well. this game's really friggin' deep. an' that bonus dungeon at the end is fuckin' killer. i'm gonna start over and maybe play through with rena and try to unlock hard and nightmare modes. what do you guys think about this game? i can't wait 'till star ocean 3 come out though...that game might make me throw down an' get a ps2 finally.

  2. I'm all about this game! Asside from Valkyrie Profile, it's the best RPG on the PSOne. If you're starting with Rena, here's some advice. Get Dias Flac to join your party, and focus everything you can muster on his Air Slash ability until it's been maxed. It's way to fast for it's own good, and it hits pretty hard too. You can beat the entire "arena" with that move alone. I've done it before.

  3. Very good game indeed, the battle system is certainly refreshing.

    And cooking r0x0rz

  4. I have returned only like two games in the last 4 years or so.

One of them was Star Ocean 2.

The story was simply appaling. Specifically it was how the characters interacted.

I remember two of the main characters were talking (a man and a woman), and it was supposed to be some type of heart wrenching type seen, and it turned out so trite and unemotional I couldn't even believe it.

Sad thing is, I REALLY wanted to enjoy it, but the writing (maybe the translation was just wacked) was just to bad for me to tolerate.

I'll try picking it up again one of these and see maybe if a second try will change my mind.

  5. cooking and item makeing are some of the best parts of the game.

  6. Cooking is the bomb!

That Iron Chef-esque minigame kept me occupied for days...litterally.

  7. I kinda like Star Ocean 1 more. I dunno.

But I'm a huge Tri-Ace fan, and I love SO, so yeah.

And yes, Kidnemo, it was the translation that sucked and not the story itself. The translation was really literal and weird and didn't work at all.

  8. I loved Star Ocean 2! It's among my all time favorite RPGs... Not too many games can touch it and is one of the many reasons why Enix & Tri Ace play second fiddle (of eastern developers) to the one and only Sega with Nintendo's 3rd. Not a bad 1,2,3 right there.

I really liked the authoring skill, it was the easiest way to get all the endings (by adjusting relationship values) and the Cave of Trials was defintily hard. I'll admit, I needed a strategy guide for it.

  9. great music and graphics, the skill system was cool, the battle engine was different. Thats about all I can say about this game in a positive manner. the voices suck, there is no plot in the first 15 hours. I really wanted to get into this game, but i never could.

Yea, thats pretty much what I figured...

I'm sure there is a great game hidden away in there, but the translation was just to bad. Not to mention I have way to many great rpg's WITH good translations to play thru first.
