The 35th anniversary of console gaming

IGN has a nice article on the 35th anniversary of the Odyssey.

I remember when I bought my first one (many many years after 1972). I thought it was missing a power cord until I realized it had a battery compartment. I still haven't played the gun games which were sold separately. I always did want to try those.

I'm interested to know where they got the 1975 Japanese Nintendo Odyssey year from. I have been looking for confirmation of it but neither Nintendo's website nor Baer's book mention the year.

  2. I never got to play the first Odyssey, but a friend of mine had an Odyssey 2, and we used to play the hell out of it after school, since his parents were at work and his older brother came home around 5. I don't remember the names of many of the games he had (he had a shitload), but our favorite was a Rally-X-type racer that was great for its time.

The Odyssey2 definitely has some classics although not as many as the 2600 or InTV. Some of its best games are the more uncommon later releases like Killer Bees!, KC's Krazy Chase, and Turtles.

  4. I was around 4 years old when the original Odyssey came out. I believe the closest thing we had to a console, was pong back around 76. We didn't get an Atari VCS until around 78-79.

I had an Odyssey 2 at one point, there were some amazingly packaged titles. Like these:

Quest For The Rings is one of the best games ever.

  7. I never had an Odyssey. I had Pong. What did I know, I was a kid? I've played Odyssey plenty of times, though. Even played the original brown box prototype.

  8. I wish my Odyssey still worked. Picked mine up at a flea market, played for 10 min and then...it died
