Well fuck.
Things about the arcade I miss that consoles are taking back:
1) Co-op play. Look at TMNT on xbox live. Headset support is still not as good as being able to punch your friend in the arm for taking the pizza, but it's damn good.
2) Rivalry/king of the arcade.
This is probably why I got into DDR in the first place, my local arcade scene had people that were competitive about it. I miss sticking my name up on high score lists and having it mean something among my friends. Once again xbox live is neat but...first off there's too much competition now and second off it's just too impersonal to be as awesome as the arcade.
Those things were what made the arcade super fun, and then stuff like Dragon's Lair and sweet grafx were just so much wow factor. Now the consoles do it all.
For arcades to become profitable they need to become a place to hang out, and that's been the successful business model, getting their profits on food and drinks.
Dave and Busters is too restaurant though and Barcade is too not-enough-lounge area. Arcade/pool hall with a lounge/some sport tv's and cheap good food and reasonable drinks please. Heaven.
Played this back when it was on test at Sega Joypolis in Odaiba. IIRC, it was 400 yen a play then and the stages were re-arranged (ie made easier). It's funny that Shaumburg gets all of the old Sega location test leftovers from Japan.

They need to get out some more dual/triple monitor games. Taito should do a Darius 5 twin-widescreen dual Type X2 cabinet. As far as a shooter goes, this would make for one that couldn't be totally replicated at home.
Look at Darius 2- even though it's got a PS2 version now, that's still not arcade perfect. If you were using a widescreen TV, then you could probably get the image to fill the screen and look a little closer to the original (IIRC, the "4:3" mode lets you set the game up to fill the screen).
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
