Semantics. Action/RPG, adventure/RPG, adventure, action/adventure; some things are better off left alone.

  4. Oh right, and how could I forget Simon's Quest. Easy #2 there, behind Zelda.

  5. I actually agree that Zelda isn't an action RPG, but I've grown so sick of debating it I don't even care. I've found that in genral whatever meaning RPG once had has long been lost on the gaming public at large.

  6. #16
The bottom line is: all the games mentioned in this thread belong in the same category, whatever that name may be.

  7. My favourite 8-bit Action RPGs are the Wonderboy games. In fact, they are among my all-time favourite games regardless of the console or genre. I really really really hope there is truth to the rumours about that new GBA Wonderboy game!

Y's is really good too. I was never a Zelda fan, unfortunately. I have always wanted to play Crystalis, because it's one of my close friend's favourite games.. but I have never gotten around to it. I played a little bit of Golden Axe Warrior way back in the day and I liked it, but it's been ages and I didn't play to much.

  8. Another thread for me to plug the best 8-bit action rpg you've never played. Magic of Scheherezade is almost hard to classify; you fight most of the time in typical action rpg fashion, but then you get into random turn based battles. he action rpg side compromises about 90% of the game, so i guess it counts. The music is awesome, and it has an Arabian theme and setting, that really should be used more.

I can't believe I forgot about this. Really inventive and often overlooked game.
