Deluxe Accoutrements
First Zelda, now Mario Kart. It's a sad time we live in when the best thing we can expect from Nintendo's treatment of a legendary franchise is to cut their losses and just lift from the best previous entry.
Its not as big a deal in a racing game of course. I just don't want them to become like Sega is now, where instead of saying "Sweet! A new Sonic/Nights game!" we say "God Sega, just please don't fuck this one up, it's too sacred."

Period. It's the proper Mario franchise. Zelda has been the same, average game over and over for 20+ years.

I would say that OoT is arguably an exception, but otherwise yes.
Now, when you say proper Mario, do you include Mario 64 and Sunshine? In that case they are still guilty of letting us down a bit with Sunshine. And what will Galaxy be? A Mario with no platforming? I hope not.
Now if by 'proper' you mean SMB->SMB2->SMB3->SMW->NSMB then yes. Other than SMW being a bit of a retread of the ideas in SMB3 its a damn near faultless progression. NSMB was the best game Nintendo has made in a long time outside of SSB.
