Thread: Soul Calibur 4

  1. MechDeus mirrors the sentiments of the majority of serious Calibur players. SC3 was a giant joke compared to the leap from SC1 to 2. Many people think SC2 was a step backward but those are generally those who were fairly ignorant of SC1 (and usually 2 as well) or those who were bitter about the changes.

SC3 was essentially Namco randomly ripping the cast in half to find moves for the shitty custom characters and giving them a bunch of half assed moves in an attempt to make up for it. Take that AND pile on a bunch of general laziness and lack of testing for glitches and balance and it's easy to see that SC3 is a total shit pile compared to SC2.

We're all hoping the in the SC community that SC4 doesn't wind up being as shitty or worse even than SC3.

  2. SC3 was fun, you people take life too seriously.

  3. SC3 gave me Setsuka, and I love Setsuka, so I can't hate the game too much.

How is a glitchfest full of characters that have half the moves they used to have fun?

And yes, for Setsuka players, Setsuka was great. Piece of shit 80% combo off of a glitch grab made for very frustrating fights on TOP of her other bullshit. Namco loves to make overpowered girl characters. Although Sets wasn't as bad as the sisters.

  5. Having played through the game and not experienced any glitches... Not sure?

I've never been a hardcore Soul Calibur person, so these half movelists you whine about were just, new move lists, something I expect to see changed in some sense. Luckilly i'm adaptable, I can understand if others have that issue, and I can certainly not argue against the idea that SC3 isn't tournament calibur.

Take a look at the last two GGs. They added Order Sol, who still has Sol's basic moveset but reacts, commands, and moves absolutely nothing like Sol and has an entirely separate system that no other character has. Yet they didn't use that to replace Sol, he's simply another character so that anyone who wants to stick with the standard can. At the same time, Sol's moves have been updated, he has had new moves added, all the stuff you would expect from an upgrade has still occurred.

Also, considering that most of the characters in SC3 did not have such things happen to them then you must've been disappointed, because a lot of them had their entire old movelists. If they really wanted to go that route they should've pulled a SB->SC, and completely revamped everyone in that manner (then named is something awesome like Soul Trebuchet). Instead we got stuff swapped around at random and comparatively small amounts of testing in favor of extras on the level of Tekken Bowling.

Although technically SC3 is probably more tournament worthy than SC2 because it has two characters that dominate instead of one and much less of a gap between them and the rest of upper tier (AFAIK, anyway).

  7. Fair enough, you're right they should have standardized changes. If they're going to alter one character they should alter all of em.

Yes to a person who wasn't serious about Calibur then what they did in 3 wasn't so bad but for serious Calibur players it was inexcusable what they did.

No they were generally hacked up move sets. Raph, Talim, X and the Sisters were poster children for what was wrong with the game. Raph didn't have ANY guard breaks (SC3 guardbreaks were stupid anyways) until Arcade edition, he also went from a total of 4 prep stances to 1 prep stance. He got a new stance that in high level play was worthless. Talim got rocked and went from upper tier to bottom feeding through bad design decisions and worthless new move additions. Xianghua was NOT toned at all and still ruled in tourneys and the sisters got BULLSHIT enhancements when they were already upper/top tier in SC2.

They also made stupid move command changes making old characters and strategies awkward with out enough new moves or old ones to make up for it with new strategies. I also won't even get into all the G22 (VC) glitches that can be whored in the game and all the parlor tricks from adding Tekken's "Tech" system.

Oh yeah Mech Deus what do you mean SC3 was more tourney worthy than SC2? Most would say that SC2 had a far more diverse array of tourney worthy characters. Most see SC3 as Calibur's Tekken 4 which is horrible.

I was being facetious because of how SC3 doesn't have one single character that's above everyone else like Cervantes was in SC2.

Cervantes was only above every one else on paper. In actuality he was only upper tier by the end of Calibur 2 and no one that I can think was playing him let alone winning with him. If any one was to complain about dominating characters in SC2 they'd have to bitch about Xianghua, Sophi, and maybe Ivy that's about it. However, Voldo, NM, Cass, and some others could actually win in SC2 tournaments especially W/O resorting to parlor tricks.
