Thread: What Video's/DVD's have you rented recently?

  1. What Video's/DVD's have you rented recently?

I've been in a real video renting mood lately, and was wondering what you'va all been hiring. 2 nights ago, I hired a ton of videos, and watched almost all of them in a row . heres the list:

Pi - Very cool and stylish. Fucking wierd as, original story, and awesome cinematography. I highly recommend it. 8/10

Requiem for a Dream - Awesome, but utterly disturbing. By the same director as Pi, and uses some of the same cinematic techniques. 8/10

Orgazmo - Very funny stuff from Trey parker and matt stone. T-rex is disgusting 9/10

Dazed and confused - I forgot how funny this movie is! Suprisingly familiar cast too. 7/10

Chasing Amy - Good, but too serious for Kevin Smith IMO. Hire clerks instead. 6/10

The virgin Suicides - Suprisingly great. really wierd. 8/10

Zoolander - This one suprised me. It was very funny in bits. Ben stiller has some killer lines in it, has a guy named "brint" and stars Billy Zane as himself 7/10

    Gasaraki vol.1 - Wierd. Not sure if I like it. - 4/10

    Gasaraki vol.2 - Same as above. - 4/10

Giant robo vol.1 - I love Giant robo. Its really awesome. It has a great retro look about it, similar to Astroboy. - 9/10

Shadow skill - Fucking terrible. Avoid it like plague. Possibly the worst Dub i've ever heard. 0/10

Battle Angel Alita - The first proper anime I ever saw. Its great. Has some really great mecha design in it. 7/10

Evil Dead 2 - Haven't watched it yet. It looks funny.

Oceans eleven - Haven't watched this yet either.

I'll probably watch Evil Dead 2 and Oceans eleven tomorrow. I've got an english test to prepare for tonight .

Its probably the best single batch of videos I've ever gotten. I want to do another one this good again, but can't think of many movies worth hiring. Hopefully this thread will help .

What have you hired recently, and what do you recommend?

I'm planning on getting Pulp Fiction with the next batch. I love that movie.

Hired? is that an Autralian term?

Well Let's see Orgazmo is pretty funny did ya see Basketball? I sort like that one better. I rented Hearbreakers with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Rat Race the lamest ending for a Movie evar.

    Korian

  3. Evil Dead 2 is one of the greatest films ever, it reigns over you all. Pi and Requiem are great as well, Aronofski is making some Sci-fi movie with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett right now. He was working on Batman Year One (!!!!!) with Frank Miller, I hope he goes for it next. Orgazmo is damn stoopid funny, "I don't mean to sound gay or anything, but I think unicorns kick ass!". I really liked Chasing Amy a while back, then I seen it again recently and said, shit, I could direct that. I'd give Gasaraki a higher score, when you compare it to other anime, but on its own I guess it doesn't stand up so well (I sold my copies).
I recently rented American Movie to show to a friend. Its a doc about this guy trying to make movies up in Milwaukee (sp), it can be a real downer if you have filmaking asperations (like my friend). I think its positive if you think of it as about a guy in nowhere and a fucked up situation trying to make his dreams come true. I rented Memento again to show to my friend, I still like it, but the editing and concept didn't impress me more the second time around (unlike Fight Club). Rented Ghost Dog again to show to some friends, this is a movie anyone intersted in the code of Bushido, New York, the maphia, and other things can enjoy. I like all the clashing of culture in the movie. Rented Donnie Darko, I thought I'd like it more than I did. The movie has no message, doesn't do anything new, and is just pretentious to me.

  4. Korian: Hired? I guess it is . I thought that it was a common one throughout the world...

Green: "I don't mean to sound gay or anything, but I think unicorns kick ass!"

    hahahahaha. How funny is he.

Aronovski could make a brilliant Batman movie IMO. It would be really dark and seedy.

  5. Well, I watched couple movies over the weekend as well:

Black Hawk Down - Awessome War film. Great direction, cinematography, action and good music. Interesting story and good actor performances. And relentless action, with great battle sequences, and cool sets. Very violent, and shows the horrors of war as what they really are. Definately one of the best films I seen this year.

Mangler 2 - I knew its going to suck, and only borrowed it from my friend, because it has Lance Henriksen in a small role(who is one of my most favorite actors , so I watched pretty much all of his movies, and have them in my collection). Well, What can I say, the movie is terrible, bad acting, lame story, annoying characters, most of who thankfully die, almost no fx, except for the end. Its just pretty much a rip off of another bad fulm, Virus, with High Tech security system at some private college, that gets infected by killer virus, and starts killing off the staff and students.

As I said, the only good part of the film is seeing Henriksen as a strict shool dean, who gets transformed into cyborg at the end of the film And does some nice Bishop from Aliens scenes with white blood vomiting and such Otherwise a complete trash

Evil Dead 2 is a great film, and I need to get it on dvd, but I prefer original Evil Dead as more favorite. It was more horror oriented, and presented some great scares, and very cool make up fx, made on very small budget. But both are excellent films, and should be in your collection if you are a horror fan.

Aronofski is making some Sci-fi movie with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett right now - its called The Fountain, and I also interested in seeing more of this project. As for Batman Year One, Warner Bros, kinda putting it on hold, so I'm not sure when the project will actually start.

Orgasmo is also great film. Lots of humor in it, and I need to get dvd of it too.

  6. Movies I've purchases and otherwise viewed:

Scooby-Doo. Great film! I thought I was going to hate it because I think the cartoon is pure ass. But I loved it. Great movie? By no means. But I loved it.

    Harry Potter.

Kate and Leopold. Gotta keep the girlie happy.

Ben-Hur. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to long for my tastes. Great flick though.

Corky Romano. Dumb, stupid, mindless humor...which is prolly why I liked it. Not enough to see again. But it was wirth the $5 rent.

As you can see, I'm not hard to please.

  7. SOrry, But Corky Romano was a waste of my $4 that I paid to rent that pice of trash film. Not funny a bit, stupid, pointless, ridiculos, and did I mentioned not funny?

I meen its a comedy so it should be at least be funny. But no, we have one stupid gag after another, but I'm not laughing. One of the worst movies EVAR But its just me, so you might actually like it.

in the past few weeks i rented:

TRAINING DAY: Not bad, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Very strong acting. Though, it got me thinking...hollywood critics constantly bash actors like Hugh Grant and Bruce Willis for playing the same characters in role after role. Notice how nobody says that about Denzel Washington? hmmm, I wonder why.....

GOODFELLAS: It's a classic. If you haven't seen it, it is a no-brainer for your next rental. Be forewarned however, the DVD has one of the worst film-to-DVD transfers I have EVER seen. But the film is still more than worth it.

Behind Enemy Lines: Not much in the way of substance, but hey this was on of those movies where the visuals and the sounds rocked my system and looked lovely on a Hi-Def TV.

  9. Well, Well. Behind the Enemy lines - Another pathetic excuse for a movie.

I wanted to see it. It looked very good in the trailer, and my friend said that it was good and he liked it. So finally came the day, when it hit the video, and I was there to rent it.

It started well, and the part with missile dodging was great both in excitment, and visual fx ways. Great cgi fx there. But once they hit the ground, it started to become aweful Its pretty much run Owen Wilson Run, and so he does for the next hour till the end. And while he is running, they shoot everything, starting from small hand guns and ending with tanks at him, but you know that you cant hit the hero, even if he is the only frikin moving thing in 500 feet in the open field. Not even mines can do the trick, when he runs IN THE MIDDLE of MINE field, miraculosly avoiding every one of them, while they explode mere few feet around him !!!

And that brings to to glorius conclusion and display of such ridiculos patriotism I never seen before. Imagine the open field with enemy tanks, some mobile artilery, multiple ground units all with heawy weaponry on one side, and 3 US helicopters on the other. In the middle our hero, Owen Wilson, running to the other side of the field, wich is about mile long ! Now, Enemies are firing everything they got, but can hit either one of helicopters, or our hero running on the empty, open field right in the middle of huge gun battle, not even trying to dodge bullets, running in STRAIGHT line !! As the battle continues, heroic US helicopters pretty much destroy almost all the opponent forces, and none of them even damaged. Can you believe this SHIT? I understand that hero side never looses, but that just RIDICULOS !!!

And ofcourse the save the guy, and they fly away happily into the sunset.

What a piece of shit !

  10. I saw evil dead 2 today, and I fucking loved it. I can't wait for the region 4 release of it. I'm gonna buy it. I prefered Evil Dead 2 to Evil Dead 1, but Evil dead 1 is the only movie to make me feel ill from gore (pencil to the ankle, ewwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!)

I also saw Spiderman today. It was great.

this is my list for this weekend so far:

    Pulp Fiction
    Goodgellas
    Preditor
UHF(I hope I can find it!!)

I guess should tell you that most of these will be on video so I can watch them in my bedroom. I hate watching movies with my family. They always ask dumb questions like "does he die?" or "is he the killer?"
