I don't accept either of those answers, sorry.
1) That's called comedy.
2) One of two whole lines he wrote made it into the script the studio liked.
NOT COMEDY
All comedy, all the time.
I find Alien Resurrection more enjoyable if I pretend it's not an Alien movie. It's got a good cast and the direction is very decent. It's also pretty funny in parts.
Overall, it's a weird mix of good and bad, but it also contains possibly the most retarded character in the history of a film genre filled with retarded characters that do stupid things that get them killed. It's the scene with the gravely-voiced dude (I forget the actor's name) who decides to split off from the group to slooooowly walk down an empty, dimly-lit corridor while picking up randomly-discarded guns that are lying about while knowing full well that the ship is infested with aliens. The scene seems to go on forever (his friends didn't seem to notice that he was gone until they ran across half the fucking ship, apparently), and of course he is eventually killed horribly like he so richly deserved.
I know it's a horror movie and all, but that scene is just way too stupid.

As for the original Alien, it has one of my all-time favorite lines in a movie: "If we're not out of here in ten minutes we ain't gonna need no rocket to fly through space."
Oh you cunts. I'm gonna watch Resurrection tonight now
