I still say 3 should have introduced the alien costume and Sandman, and basiclaly should have been a set-up film for 4 when Venom should have been the main bad guy. 3 should have ended in the church right when the camera panned into Venom's open maw. Instead, Spidey's most popular opponent was given the blow-off treatment.

Hell, before 3 I didn't give one shit about Sandman, but they (and especially Thomas Hayden Church) did such a good job with him that I would have liked to seen him get more screen time. 3 was the Batman and Robin of Spidey films. Well, okay, it's not THAT bad, but you get the idea- although nobody could have juggled all the stuff in that clusterfuck better than Rami did. In that sense, it was impressive, but still a clusterfuck.

Dude, don't put Raimi in that statement, the suits forced Venom on him. He just wanted to do the Sandman story and wrap up Harry's arc that had been building since the first movie; if it had been up to him there would have been no black suit let alone Venom.

You make a point, but it's Rami's fault as well. Yeah, the suits forced Venom on him, but with that being the case, he should have realized the mess that would result and just left Sandman for another day when he could have done him justice. Instead, the guy has such a raging hard-on for the old Steve Ditko/Stan Lee villains that he made the decision to just shoehorn all that shit into one movie and it suffered as a result.

Rami got his rocks off with the first two movies. He should have catered to the fans in the third. He knew everyone wanted Venom and he didn’t give a shit.

Sandman was god awful. Insanely one dimensional and was nothing more a tech demo. I do believe Spidey 3 was Batman & Robin bad. The scene in the bar with testoroided Parker riping into Mary Jane? Horrible.

  6. Pirates 2 and 3 were also back to back crappy movies.

Is there proof that Venom was forced on Raimi? After Spidey 1 and 2 I don't think they'd have any leverage to tell him shit.

  7. Yeah. The original plan was to have Sandman and Vulture. This is supported by storyboards in the "Making of 3" book. At the near last minute, Arad and his crew basically told Raimi that Venom would be in the movie, so things had to be rewritten rather quick.

Hence, Venom getting straight bricked on.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.

  8. I can't fault them for forcing out Vulture though. Worst Spidey villain ever.

But what a fucking great tech demo it was.

Plus, I thought Thomas Hayden Church managed to convey a lot of emotion for such a one-dimensional part. The character only sucked because he had to share screen time with 10,000 other characters and plot points. If expanded upon, I think he could have been cool, and that's coming someone who always that thought Sandman was one of the lamest Spidey bad guys ever.

Holy fucking shit, yes. That dance number was the gayest shit ever.

I guess it was worth it if all that crap jam-packed into 3 meant that we wouldn't be forced to watch Spidey fight some crotchety old bald dude with wings.

  10. The Eric Larsen Vulture was pretty rad, but then again, he was carrying two gigantic uzi's.
