teaser trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger is mainly newsreels from WWII, with FDR narrative, and it ends with a profile shot of Chris Evans in full Cap costume....and ends with the shield flying at the audience..
absolutely DEAFENING noise as Director Joe Johnston, Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving are introduced.
Johnston says the film si about telling Captain America's origin story.
Evans says "it's a little intimidating, a little daunting..hopefully joe will send me in the right direction and I won't ruin the movie."
Evans says he started shooting just five days ago. "The suit is fantastic, and it's just ...a thrill," he said.
Hugo Weaving is asked about how he envisioned playing the Red Skull.
He says he spent a lot of time listening to Werner Herzog and another German artist and synthesized the voices to create the voice of the Skull
More footage shown next, just shot last week
Lots of footage of Hugo Weaving pre-skull face and... a cosmic cube?
That's all for Cap- it's only been a week after all. Switching over to Thor now!
Director Kenneth Branagh is first on stage, and talks about how he's new to comics but is really enjoying diving into this universe.
the cast joins the director now, with Kat Dennings, Natalie Portman, Clark Greg, Tom Hiddleston, and of course Chris Hemsworth, Thor himself!
Evans says he loves origin pieces, and he thinks its gives them a big advantage when trying to interlock stories like what Marvel is trying to do in building up to the Avengers..
Feige adds that the leaked image of Cap on the Internet recently didn't do justice to the look of the film. He also said the film will be entirely in the 1940s...
Johnston said the mask of the Red Skull isn't that uncomfortable...
Now Feige and Johnston are teasing some footage shot last week. clip showed an unmasked Red Skull looting a tomb in a castle, which belongs to Odin. There's a nod to the Cosmic Cube, a staple of Cap comics.
the Skull then finds a hidden compartment, finds a box inside and opens it. An old man warns the Skull that man was not meant to see what's inside. "Exactly," answers the Skull.
with that, the Cap crew walks off and Thor director Kenneth Branagh comes onstage
Branagh thanks the crowd for welcoming him to Comic Con, saying he's a comic-con virgin.
He says he wasn't much of a comic book nerd growing up, but he loved THor above all others.
He wanted to translate the grandeur of the comics and says the gods smiled on him with a fantastic cast, and then he introduces them..
Kat Denning, the SHIELD agent guy (sorry, blanked on his name), and Chris Hemsworth, the God of THunder himself, Thor.
tech issues, sorry.
Hemsworth says getting to figure out how to use Mjolnir was a challenge, because the hammer is such a character in the film. He talked about learning how to hold it, and how he would use it to hit people, and swing it around...
Boucher asks Portman about playing Jane Foster, a character who hasn't always been well defined in the comics.
"I was really looking forward to play such a beloved character," she said, adding that "it was really exciting to play a scientist onscreen."
portman talks about her feelings after leaving the Star Wars prequels. "I don't think I would say disappointed," she said, but she did point out that all the greenscreen work and special effects shots in those movies was a challenge. She says the FX work in "Thor" was a different way to approach filmmaking and enjoyed the new challenge.
Denning is playing a character named Darcy, a protege of Jane Foster, "who doesn't really know anything." Denning also comments after the crowd barely reacts to what she said, "see? the crowd doesn't care about her.."
Tom Hiddleston says playing the God of Mischief, Loki, was enjoyable and complex.
Clark Gregg (thx Randall) said he had no idea when he first signed on for IRon Man that he would be crossing over into other Marvel films.
Gregg says the scene in IM2 where he finds Mjolnir in the desert, he was clueless about what was going on with it and asked Feige about it. He says feige was shocked. "No one told you? It's for THOR!"
Feige addresses how the mythology-heavy THOR storyline woudl be connected to the real world Marvel universe established in IM and HUlk.
footage now.
so the trailer of THOR did clarify how the world of Thor blends into the modern day world.
It was 3D btw. Thor and Odin have a strained relationship, and the All-Father casts out his son to earth, hoping he learns to become worthy of his name, powers, and title. Sweeping shots of the Golden REalm of Asgard are shown, the Asgardians in battle gear, including Thor.
Thor is seen being interrogated by Gregg's SHIELD AGENT, about who he is, and where he comes from, and where he learned his fighting techniques.
At one point, Thor tells Portman, who found him in the desert after Odin banished him.. he tells her about his past and his powers...."your ancestors called it magic. You call it science. In my land, its one and the same."
In response to an Audience question,Branagh says don't assume dr. Don Blake won't be part of THOR in some fashion. He enjoys taking parts of the comic's history and interlocking them in surprising ways.
Portman also said she won't be in The Avengers as Jane Foster, but she did say she will appear in Thor 2 and 3, if and when they happen.
a fan asks Feige, "Edward Norton!"
Feige answers, " he won't be here today."
he goes on tosay, as audible boos break out across Hall H, that Marvel loves continuity and remaining respectful to the characters, but as Norton himself said, The Hulk is bigger than any actor.
and he added that the panel is not over yet.
Hemsworth is askd by a girl dressed as Dark Phoenix how heavy the hammer was?
"It got easier to lift it as the movie went on," Hemsworth answered.
Hemsworth says he didn't just read comics to prepare for playing THOR. He said he read a ton of comics, books on Norse mythology and others on people dealing with difficult relationships.
Feige is asked about the possibility of R-rated Marvel properties. he reveals that Frank Castle is back under the auspices of Marvel, and they plan to introduce him into the Marvel U shortly....
Feige did say you won't be seeing Wolverine in the Captain America movie because he's part of a deal with Fox
Portman says films like "V for Vendetta" the "Star Wars" prequels and THor were appealing to her because they are "timeless stories."
She said the stories can be small and large scale..."It's every fan's dream," she adds to make movies for such a passionate fan base.
Branagh on the action scenes: "you get inspired by seeing other's people's work, and what other people are drawn to. There are always cool ideas coming from different directions."
Now they're replaying the footage...
and they walked offstage
