Thread: Rotten Tomatoes' Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies

  1. Rotten Tomatoes' Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies

We're launching our list of the 100 best reviewed sci-fi movies today.

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/featur...al/2007/scifi/

    A few caveats:
    1. Neither Tron nor The Fifth Element got good enough reviews to make it. I don't care for Tron, but not having The Fifth Element was a bummer.
    2. Blade Runner is based on the original cut, not the director's cut. I know, we fought and fought and fought for it...
    3. No zombie movies, anime, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting.

Other than that, I think this is a solid list. Good mix of arty, obscure, and mainstream movies. And every cinemaphile will be get a kick out of what made #69.

  2. Fifth Element is probably the best movie of all time. Not making it onto the top sci-fi movie list makes this whole thing null, but just for the sake of it, I read the thing.

Dark City and Gattaca should be way higher up, as should Total Recall. WTF at The Abyss being so low? Also, Minority Report shouldn't even be on the list AT ALL. I haven't seen Eternal Sunshine, but I doubt it's the second best sci-fi movie. Not sure if I agree with E.T. being number one... not that it's bad or anything, just not number one.

Also, where's the original Dr. Moreau movie at?

  3. I wonder what the criteria the reviewers used for the Rotten Tomatoes' 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time. Some of the movies were rightly so on the list, but the ranking seems a little skewed. I agree with Calliander and Sqoon about the Fifth Element not even getting a place on the list and the fact that Gattaca and Dark City were in the 70's-80's. How can Children of Men and Eternal Sunshine be so high up? Also, it's a shame that the Evil Dead wasn't mentioned either.

  4. Wow, I didn't think The Man Who Fell To Earth would be on there.

  5. i find it really hard to believe that there are 100 sci-fi movies better than the fifth element, or even a hundred good ones period. i also, would never put eternal sunshine in sci-fi.

Well then you have no idea what Sci-fi actually is then.

  7. The Fifth Element was not all that, so I'm not shocked that it didn't make it on the list.

I wouldn't include Eternal Sunshine either. Its primary genre is drama, it has secondary scifi elements, but that doesn't make it scifi. Isn't this the second scifi list to include it recently? I think the other was Entertainment Weekly and it was high there as well. I still say it's not scifi.

If Chris Tucker wasn't in the fifth element it'd probably make the top 10.

    Bah, I fucking hate E.T.

  9. Eternal Sunshine should have been #1. Having Children of Men in the top ten is laughable though.

  10. You know what's really laughable? Having to click a link for each and every synopsis page just to find out what's on it. Even IGN puts more than a picture and two paragraphs of content on a page! This is too much damn advertising.
