Thread: The New Map for War and Peace.

  1. The New Map for War and Peace.

On browsing the stuff on the TED website that photosynth video linked to, I came across this talk by US National Security Advisor Thomas Barnett. It clocks in at 23 minutes but it's really worth it if you give a shit about any of this.

In this bracingly honest and funny talk, international security strategist Thomas P.M. Barnett outlines a post-Cold War solution for the foundering US military: Break it in two. He suggests the military re-form into two groups: a Leviathan force, a small group of young and fierce soldiers capable of swift and immediate victories; and an internationally supported network of System Administrators, an older, wiser, more diverse organization that actually has the diplomacy and power it takes to build and maintain peace.
While I am generally anti-war, the simple fact of the matter is that war is and probably always will be a part of our lives. What Barnett suggests really does sound like it could work, and make the whole peace process much more achievable.

I mean, it's almost crazy that no-one has come up with this beforehand. It seems so obvious.
    ABOUT ME.

  2. It's all a matter of culture. Europe was quickly rebuilt from the ashes with the Marshall Aid. (same was true for Japan)

All the money we pour into rebuilding africa and the middle-east seem to go to waste. Do as Luttwak suggests, ignore the Middle-East - it doesn't matter:

  3. Let the middle east kill itself - just keep ourselves the fuck out of there and we'll be fine.
    Boo, Hiss.

  4. For people who want us out of the Middle East so bad you seem to have no qualms about sticking your head in sand. Strange.
    Time for a change

  5. I'm referring to our military bases and everything. Just leave them the hell alone.
    Boo, Hiss.

  6. That or address the core issues putting sand in everyone's vaginas.
    1. Palestine/Israel
    2. Syria
    3. Iran
    4. United States favoritism over all others of Israel no matter what new horror they inflict
    5. Whatever.

  7. Dreamcast

I cannot recommend The Pentagon's New Map enough. It really will change your view of war in today's world.

Also, his weblog is an excellent source of info about how we'll get our Department of Everything Else.

Like it or not, the US is the world's cop. We can either step up and meet our destiny as a force for good or we can work to forestall globalization and damn generations to poverty and disconnectedness.

Say, what are you again? You have to be a palestinian refugee from one of those camps in Lebanon, right? I have to admit your diatribes make my blood boil. You are totally buying into the 'blame Israel' myth, sold by islamist movements such as The Muslim Brotherhood or Hizb ut-Tahrir. The reason I'm asking about your heritage, is because I can't make sense of you, unless you are an indoctrinated palestinian muslim. When you lived in Lebanon, did you attend Hezbollah schools?
I'm sorry if this post sounds rude in-your-face, but I'm really curious where you get your information from.

Where I live radical islam poses a grave danger. An everyday example: yesterday the media blew the lid open on a kindergarten scandal. The HUT had infested the place and had begun indoctrinating the children. With in a short span, they had segregated the girls from the boys, banned trips to the beach (moral reasons), banned the children walking near a christian cemetery (we are dirty kufars), banned music and dance (again moral reasons) and naturally forced the kids to cut up santa's hats on halloween, as they were 'christian symbols'. Before they were stopped they had begun teaching the children "what was wrong with democracy". 2-3 months was all it took to Talibanize the place, which is why I will never let my guard down as long as islamists are around.

Defeating Israel is not the solution to the Arab Worlds problems, nor is Israel the cause. The Middle-East will not be a muslim paradise or even a remotely better place to live for anyone, if you annihilate the jews. U.S.A, supports Israel because it is a good investment. I mean, would it be smart to invest in the cultural hole referred to as the 'Middle-East'? And when I call it a 'cultural hole', I'm referring to the masses of illiterates, the non-production of scientific articles and the general state of human rights. Look into the United Nations Arab Human Development Reports, and ask yourself, from where the problems stem:

"The figures for translated books are also
    discouraging. [...] The cumula-
tive total of translated books since the Caliph
Maa’moun’s time (the ninth century) is about
100,000, almost the average that Spain trans-
lates in one year (Galal, S., 1999)."

Are you Thomas Freidman's ghost? Seriously, how much of that Free-Market Economy kool-Aid have you choked down? All those people that are disconnected and in poverty? We help put them there with globalization. In a society based on capital, someone has to be at the lower rungs every time. Capitalism is fundamentally flawed that way.

Step up and meet our destiny? To do what exactly - get rid of fundamentalists who think they have a 'destiny'? We aren't even close to the world's cop - we just feed ourselves that PR bullshit. Seriously, slap the defense departments dick out of your mouth. Tell them they're not allowed to touch you on your bathing suit area.
    Boo, Hiss.

  10. Seriously, we're the only ones who consider ourselves "the world's cop." The U.S. cannot expect the world to take it seriously as a staunch defender of democracy and liberty while it holds a half dozen territories under its belt. A lot of people don't want to hear that, and it's because the truth hurts.
