I think one subtly important difference is that the bad guys use realistic guns, not video game disintegration lasers.
This was much better than the first movie. It was actually interesting and it felt like something was on the line.
It wouldn't have been. But it might have been more charmingly cheesy if they had lasers.
I did quite enjoy Nick "Plumping Up Like Morpheus" Fury. He really made the movie.
That wasn't because of lasers.
