This was the only trailer I remember from Transformers.

No, he's talking about the beginning of Lost season 4 in January 2009.
It makes sense to have this movie lead in his big show. It creates hype and instant marketing for the show since he's probably the biggest name in television right now.

I forgot about Hot Rod until now. That movie looked really, really awful.

That movie must have a colossal marketing budget, its trailer has been attached to every movie I've seen in the past 3 months.
Oh yeah, it had a trailer for Superbad too. Punching chicks in the tits is always memorable.

Most trailers, unless otherwise attached to the movie, are chosen by individual theatres. This is to avoid movie theatres advertising movies they don't plan to carry in the future. Although you're right that nowadays more movies are paying for spots.
Superbad looks awesome too.
Balls of Fury was attached to my theater.

Rumor has it that this might be based off of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.
