The new 3-year warranty plan from MS is a good sign that they're no longer asleep at the switch; it's got to be cheaper to start manufacturing reliable 360s than to keep replacing them right?
Not like the harddrive is the expensive part.
I still don't give a shit. I don't think I'd care even if it dropped to $399. I mean, my nephew has a PS3 and I walked in on him playing Spiderman 3 the other day and asked if he was playing Spiderman 2.
This is really the most underwhelming hardware generation in gaming history.
It wouldn't matter as much if there were any decent games to play, but...there aren't.

PS3 is still only 7 months? old, give it time.
Explain this. Also: free stuff.
Unless I'm mistaken, the PS2 didn't have high-profile titles that looked like PS1 games 7 months in. And it at least had a few decent games under its belt.
Still, maybe the PS3 is just low out of the gate. Like, real slow. But Sony slashing the price $100 this soon can't be a good sign.

No absolutely not, but I'm just saying this generation may or may not be the worst generation, I wouldn't count it out just yet.
Something that has to be considered as well is that the gap between PS1/PS2 is much slimmer than the gap between PS2/PS3. I think I read that generally budgets for PS2 games were twice that of PS1 games, now PS3 games are 10 times the budget of PS2 games.
We all know that PS3 is being sold as a long-term system, so it's not that surprising that it's getting off to such a weak start. Even Square doesn't have a damned thing to release this entire year for the system. Even still, given how weak the library is and how ridiculous the price is, it's selling incredibly well in my opinion. Isn't it doing better than Dreamcast?
