Thread: Moving to Canada

  1. Moving to Canada

My g/f got into grad school at the University of BC, so come next month we'll be moving up there. We have a trip planned in a couple days to go scouting for apartments or housing solutions. I know we have quite a few Canadians on the board and plenty that travel, so this thread is to fish for any advice or things I should know.

There's minor things like using the metric system and different currency, sure. Electricity seems the same from what I've found. Traffic rules seem generally the same. She'll be going to school and already has a job as a TA, but I'll need to find work of some sort. I've heard EA has a base in Vancouver, and while I've heard horror stories about their work conditions, I think it might be worth trying to get in there, at least for a while. Otherwise, Vancouver's a big place and I'll try to continue to freelance stuff...there's Craigslist for Vancouver, of course, but I wasn't sure if there were other resources people might recommend.

So ultimately, if anyone has any good tips about moving to Canada for a couple years, or any traveling experiences like this with experience to share, go for it : )

  2. I might be looking to move up to New Brunswick later in the year for work, interested to see where this goes. I know very little about applying for work visas and that sort of thing.

  3. don't worry too much about the metric system, its way better once you're used to it.

  4. Expect a lot of construction in Vancouver. They're preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Beautiful city though. I imagine an artist of your talents could have a lot of fun drawing landscape around there.

Also expect a lot of chinese people.

Unless the typical Vancouver landscape is comprised of busty cat-girls, I don't know if I'll ever have fun drawing them. But if it is, I guess it makes sense why everyone keeps telling me I'll like it there

  6. You should try it. But with the big asian community there I don't think fury art will be hard to find anyway. Try eating at Chef Rob Feenie's restaurants. He's an awesome chef. He was actually the first competitor to beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America when they had a showdown.

My last ex-girlfriend lives in Burnaby now, which is right near Vancouver. Stay away from her.

I guess I'm TNL's token Vancouverite. I haven't been to Oregon since I was like 13 but I don't remember it being that much different than BC.

Just avoid the East Hastings AIDS-infested drug addict ghetto.

  8. C degrees will never feel natural to you. Never.
    Check out Mr. Businessman
He bought some wild, wild life
On the way to the stock exchange
He got some wild, wild life

  9. I don't know much about the west coast, but I do know this. Prepare to get taxed up the ass.

  10. BLAME CANADA!!!
(it's not even a really country anyway!)

    sorry, someone had to.
