Thread: Superman: Doomsday

  1. Just watched the commentary... Lois knowing Clark's secret before movie starts confirmed. They said that she's rude to him when he leaves for Afghanistan because she knows and is fed up with him practically insulting her intelligence by keeping the charade up.

#2. For a movie named Doomsday we did not get nearly enough of him.

#3. The fight scenes were good, but I'd rather watch Superman pummel Darkseids ass in the one JLU episode "Destroyer"

#4. Lex looked like "The Man Who Fell to Earth".
I agree with all counts except #3, which I did agree with until I went back and watched right after the film. There have never been better fight scenes than this film.

I hated the new voices and designs (what the fuck did they do to Mercy?) with the single exception of Lois. Sorry haters, but Anne Heche+new design=best Lois Lane ever. The STAS/JLU Lois was the one character that never sat right with me.

I did feel like the new voices/designs were intentionally different to establish this as seperate from the DCAU.

All in all, I thought it was great and I really don't care how well it adhered to the comic because Superman is a lame hero.
To boldly go where lots of men have gone before...

  3. This on the Live Marketplace for DL, for anyone who wants to try before they buy. I think it's like 350 points or something.

  4. The lack of connection to DCAU really kills this. It's not different enough to be a straight adaptation, and it's not interesting enough on its own.

But! This is for 12-year olds, for whom it'll be awesome. I don't think we're the target audience for it.

edit: More to the point, I feel like the fight's aren't as good because you have no investment in the character's history. It's not DCAU Superman, it's just "a" Superman. He gets punched to death, and it's just like, oh, ok.

  5. Yeah, but it's not even death in this. It's more like he got punched into taking a long nap for a few days.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.

  6. That's another thing. Don't kill him and then show him alive in a tank exactly three scenes later.

Actually, I'm pretty sure back when the line was announced, they explicitly said these movies were going to be targeted at the fans, not kids. Whether they hit that target with this one is obviously debatable, and the marketing department seems not to have gotten the memo, since the commercials seem to be playing more on Cartoon Network (regular, not [adult swim], mind you) than, say, during Heroes.

Eh, unless it's some radically different continuity like Secret Identity, Superman's Superman.

Yeah, that was lame... but would you rather they pulled the new-age retro hippie crap the comics did to explain him coming back?

I absolutely dont think this movie made the fact clear enough. And I dont know how you think it wouldnt be relevant especially because you are obviously a comic fan. Identity reveals are HUGE in the comic world, and are dramatic in and of themselves. How would you not want to see that?
And yeah, its hopeless to get into the whole, "How can she not know who he is because he's just wearing glasses" conversation. The best of Superman fans cant and dont even want to touch that topic mind control lol

Agreed. This was just a cocktease to what could have been.

Maybe Timm felt they couldnt do it in the traditional DCAU because they already blew their Doomsday load there <shrugs>

The best explanation (although not necessarily valid/realistic) is that since Superman doesn't wear a mask, no one really assumes he has a secret identity. Couple that with Clark being such a benign dork, people just don't pay much attention or even wonder enough to put two and two together.

I thought I remembered an episode of the Superman Animated series where they attempted to explain it. I think it involved Saturn Girl from the Legion of superheros (she controls minds), the Legion chased Brainiac to Smallville, where he was trying to go Terminator on a young Clark Kent.By the end of the episode Saturn Girl erased everyones minds who had witnessed the fight, including Clarks, and gave Clark a pair of glasses that had some kind of mojo on them, where noone could tell he was Supes with them on or something. Pretty crazy.
