The plate in his head must be the vintage metal variety.
lol, please remember that you are talking to an EE that collects antique electronics. I own quite a few pieces that have NO plastic in them. And lol at "The medical fields would collapse." There was a time when it had no plastic too.
Without oil the world will change. Things will become more expensive. What was convenient today will become a luxury. But we won't all die, and as a society we will not lose all of our achievements. Its just that many of them will no longer be affordable. Many things you take for granted will only be affordable to the super rich once synthetics are the only source for plastics and the products they are made from.

I took some engineering classes as electives because they were easy, and that was at a real engineering school. No one is impressed by EE.

the point is, like I said, is shit will become more expensive. Most of the shit that is currently made from plastic, used to be made from glass or Phenol formaldehyde resin. People will either have to go back to sterilizing things and reusing them or start forking out for new stuff every time anyone goes to the hospital.
and yes, I know you are thinking "well what about pacemakers?" With something like a pacemaker, the plastic isn't what drives the price up on that. They will either eventually come up with a substitute as good or use recycled plastics.
Just think about food for a second.
How much food is wrapped/sealed in plastic.
Ask yourself, can you distribute said product otherwise.
Seriously, how can you be so ignorant towards Plastics? Jesus christ I look around my room and there's probably 300 things made with some form of plastic.
