As for why it's shutting down, let's see what their Wikipedia entry has to say...Amp'd Mobile sent out a text message this evening -- seemingly to its entire customer base -- unceremoniously stating that service "may" dry up this coming Tuesday at 12:01am. Get those number ports fired up, folks.
On June 1, 2007, Amp'd filed for chapter eleven bankruptcy. According to court documents, around 80,000 of its 175,000 subscribers were recorded as nonpaying customers.

Damn, I liked some of the things Amp'd was doing (like free texting) and was hoping they'd pressure the bigger providers into matching some feature. It really bugs me that I pay extra to send a text message with way less bandwidth than a phone call.
However, Amp'd was doing something seriously wrong if nearly half their customer base was not paying.

That's the demographic they were aiming for. You want young hood children owning your phones, fine, but they are probably the least likely to pay off their bills. Same with any other bills that poor people have to pay.
The problem is parents get their kids these phones. expecting them to pay the bill. My friends brother is 14 with a 500$ phone bill that his parents wont pay for.

My sisters have done the same to my parents, but they were both over the age of 18. Now I had to get my dad a phone under my name because they want a $1k deposit from him for a phone.
Why can't people just learn to pay bills?

seriously, get off the phone and get a fucking life. I spend ~$40 a month on mine (which I just recently got only because I needed it for work) and I spend about 200 minutes on it during any given month. Cell phones are the devil. And fuck text messaging. Fucking talk to someone if you so despereatly need to contact them.
