I would try the other stuff, but I think a big draw for the 60's stuff is the acting and lack of budget.

Also I usually can't relate to alien characters, (or elves and shit in lotr). I mean fuck I have enough giving a shit about all the bad stuff that happens to real life people, how am I going to care about what happens to fictional aliens?

That being said, and in the spirit of self contradiction, I find spock not only the best character in the 60's series, but the one I most relate to.

As for DS9, just skip the Kira or Jake episodes and watch all of the Garak, Dukat, Odo and Worf stories. Which I know are all aliens, but by DS9 it's a multicultural thing.

And strangely you can almost see Sisko grow a pair of balls in the show.

Another good thing about DS9: only 50% of the episodes involve the crew members experiencing bizarre personality shifts caused by an alien influence, down from 90% in TOS.

Mind you, when Star Trek Online comes out I'm going to get a Defiant-class ship somehow and blow up Ferangi trade convoys, but still they have their charms.
