Thread: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

  1. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

I was surprised to see that this doesn't have a thread yet, but after watching the "leaked" pilot this morning, I wanted to discuss it.

First, a little background from Wikipedia:

The Sarah Connor Chronicles is an American television series scheduled to debut on the U.S. television network Fox in early 2008, Sundays at 9 PM Eastern. It is a continuation of the Terminator film franchise. Produced by Warner Bros. Television and C2-Pictures, it will revolve around the life of Sarah Connor, and her son, John Connor after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The series is being executive produced by Terminator 3 producers and C2 Pictures co-presidents Mario Kassar and Andrew G. Vajna, C2 Senior Vice President James Middleton, David Nutter, and Josh Friedman, who is also writing.

The new installment in the Terminator franchise revolves around the characters of Sarah Connor and her teenage son, John. James Middleton says that the series will explore what happened to Sarah Connor after the end of "T2," when the character went on the run. "She has the weight of the world on her shoulders and also has to raise a teenage son who may be the salvation of humanity," he said.

In an interview on June 20, 2007 posted to IGN, Josh Friedman revealed that the writers and producers are going to avoid the Terminator of the Week plot device and that Sarah, John, and Cameron will have other threats than just Terminators. Skynet will also come into play as the series progresses.

At the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah, John and the Terminator successfully destroy the T-1000 and the arm and computer chip from the first Terminator. Sarah and John then watch as the Terminator is lowered into a molten steel pit in an attempt to destroy all future technology that could be used to create Skynet. Sarah and John now find themselves alone in a very dangerous and complicated world. As fugitives from the law, they are confronted with the reality that still more enemies from the future, and the present, could attack at any moment.

In an interview on June 22, 2007, Josh Friedman revealed that the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines have no bearing on this timeline, but do occur in an alternate timeline.
I was surprised to see how snugly the series fit in to continuity right after T2. And I never liked the actress that played Sarah Connor back in the day and I didn't like EITHER John Connor actor, but the cast of this show is pretty damn likeable.

One plot device from the pilot involves a Terminator posing as a teacher and shooting at John in a classroom. Looks like that's gonna change before the series debuts:

On July 23, 2007, the BBC reported that certain parts of the pilot, involving a Terminator posing as a teacher attacking John at school, would be changed following the shooting at Virginia Tech. Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Liguori could not say what the new version would be.
Also, looks like it's gonna fit in with the new Terminator Trilogy that's in production:

On May 10, 2007, the Halcyon Company announced its acquisition of the Terminator franchise and the development of Terminator 4, which is planned to be released in early 2009.[13] Andy Vajna and James Middleton confirmed in Variety that a new film trilogy is in development with a link to the series. "There will be a connection," Middleton said.
So T3 is getting ret-conned huh? I really liked T3, and was curious to see where T4 would've taken those characters as a continuation of that story. Everyone should go get the pilot from the usual places and then come back here and discuss this with me.

  2. This pic was on the XBL Marketplace page for Comic-Con:

Maybe we get some marketplace content this week, no?

  3. Just saw the extended version of T2 the other night. I forgot how badass that movie was.

I'm not sure if I'm feeling this whole TV Series thing. The franchise started 23 years ago and being a follower, I don't think this TV series will hold up. We'll see.

I really hope they tie in all the previous Terminator movies when they do T4. Anything else would be insulting to such a great story.

  4. I've never watched any of the full Terminator movies actually. That and RoboCop.
