It's better because it's a lot more fun. Also the class system is better, story is better, characters are better, graphics are better, music is better, etc. IX is a good game, but my least favorite of the DS version DQ games. I never played VI before the DS version, so there was no nostalgia at play for me.

No way. The DS remakes are so airy and lively and fun. It's like they enjoy being played. V in particular is much better than the original.

I like this description. On the surface they're nothing special, but they pull you along with a wink and a grin. They're just so damn likable.

I've been toying with the idea of buying the Super Famicom DQ games (they are dirt cheap) and installing translated English roms on the boards. Yes, there are emulators and flash carts that could be used instead, but an actual SFC cart in english would be really cool.
