Thread: Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI remakes coming to DS

  1. I'm really digging this game a lot. Money I've noticed isn't a major issue like it was in some of the later *previous* titles. I just picked up my 3rd character and now I'm grinding it out a little to make sure I can murder anything tough I might run into later on.

I wish something like this has come out on the SNES years ago. This is a title that should have been here ages ago.

  2. so you could play it 5 - 10 times over before playing chrono trigger or final fantasy for the 15th - 20th time.

  3. Just picked up my 4th character, and I seem to have hit the first required grinding point. In the Underkeep, there are these blue gargoyle enemies that spam Sizzle (or whatever they're calling Firebane these days), hit like a truck, have absurd amounts of defense, and occasionally cast the Ironize spell... fucking dickfuckass annoying pricks. They've wiped me twice so far, and none of my characters have Stopspell (Fizzle? Dazzle? Seriously, FUCK these DQ spell names), so I guess I gotta gain some levels.

  4. You're complaining about spell names in a series that once featured "HURT" and "HURTMORE?"

  5. The tank guy Carver gets a move that hits for double damage and it kicks the hell out of those guys. Just bear in mind that it greatly lowers his defense during that same round.

Yes, I am. I have the DW2-7 schema ingrained in my mind and I'm too old and crotchety to learn this absurd razzle/dazzle gibberish.

I was going on the assumption that Double-Up was one of those "charge up this round, hit 2x next" skills which I think are worthless. I stand corrected!

  7. I was under the impression those charge moves usually wind up doing more than 2x damage. I mean: 2 moves at X attack power will be weaker than 1 move at 2X attack power if the monster has a decent amount of defense. This would explain why Double-Up hurts those blue guys so badly.

  8. I dunno, the only time I used anything like that was DQ8's tension system. Once you get to like, 50+ it's worth it, but wasting turns on 5 and 20 is just that, as you'll do more damage in 2 or 3 turns attacking normally than you would "charging up". Not to mention that most bosses have some kind of bullshit tension-cancelling move (sleep, stun, dispel, etc.).

I took your advice, and holy shit double-up is an awesome, borderline-broken skill. It always happens first action of the round, AND hits metal slimes for 2 in addition to crazy damage it normally does to other monsters. You'd think they'd give it at least some kind of MP cost, but nope, it's free. Only issue I had with the defense penalty was on Marduk... he oneshotted Carver with a Frizzle. By that point I had already done a crapton of damage to him using double-up that I just shrugged and finished the fight with him dead.

Finally unlocked the job system, and here's my plan for my current party: Hero - Ranger, Carver - Gladiator, Milly - Sage, Nezan - Paladin, Ashlynn - Luminary (I think this one was called "Superstar" in DW7).

Pretty much. I'd always loved these RPGs and truthfully I like them a lot more then the current gen stuff that's out now these days.

Yeah I was there also. If you've been smart about it and kept a lot of money, head back to the 1st town and buy that Armor from the 1st shop. Solid fucking defense and magic defense. it'll only cost you 7000 tho lol

  10. I've very recently started playing Dragon Quest IV, basically my first DQ game, and am loving it right now. Hard to put down as I keep wanting to progress further, so far I've played through the first two chapters (what happened to the people of Zamoksva???). Love the visuals and environments of the DS remake, very well done.
