The only reason I do that is because I send out invites in bulk. I don't even look to whom I am sending them to. I'm sure everyone else does the same.
Then don't send me invites every time I sign on to any game you are currently playing. <3

But great games have enough variety ingrained into the gameplay itself that they don't need a bunch of fluffy modes to make them look like they have depth and longevity.
See for example:
Unreal Tournament '99 - Capture the Flag
Battlefield 2 - Conquest
Enemy Territory - Campaign
Counter-Strike - Detonation / Hostage Escort
et al.
There's a major difference between variety and depth of gameplay. What you just described is the later. The games I tend to play for extended periods of time tend to have both (Halo, UT), and while I can enjoy games with deep gameplay (Gears) I can't play them for months on end because they lack the variety necessary to keep things interesting for me.
