Thread: Am I Being Scammed?

  1. Am I Being Scammed?

So I put something up on Ebay earlier tonight, and I checked it again only to find out that somebody had purchased it using Buy It Now. I check my e-mail, and here is what I see:

I have bought this your lovely item, please are you sure that it is in good condition, because am sending it out as a gift to my relative who is to celebrating his birthday in Lagos Nigeria.I want you to know that i have calculate the postage cost to Lagos Nigeria via Global Express Guaranteed®(EMS) 1-3 days delivery .I will be fully responsible for the postage cost okay.I would have prefer you to checked the postage cost by yourself or ask you to send the item to my home address in US but am currently on holidays in Germany, I will pay you via PayPal only, please no other payment method than PayPal. If that is okay then get back to me ASAP for immediate payment.
Now, things are seeming kind of fishy to me here. The thing is, they're asking to pay via PayPal, and I don't know enough about PayPal scams. Is there some PayPal "trick" this person could be using that would send me a payment that way, but then the payment wouldn't be legit?

Edit: Also, to add, the user is "unregistered" on ebay. So, yeah, I pretty much know this is shady, I'm just wondering about the PayPal part.

  3. Hmm... now I've just got to figure out how to get my item re-listed under the claims that the buy it now was a scam.

When you relist it, require immediate payment when Buy It Now is chosen. You can also block bidders from countries you don't ship to.

  5. Just send him your panties; the man's got an itch only they can scratch and he can only pay by Paypal.

  6. Anything involving Nigeria is a scam. Nigeria's GDP consists mostly of money from stupid Americans.

  7. Never deal with Nigerians. The country was founded upon internet scams even before the internet was founded.

  8. Why is Nigeria the hot bed of internet fraud? It used to be China, and Nigeria just took over.

Also, I think Nigerian scammers would be 100 times more successful if they just lied and said they wer from some other country.

  9. What are you selling anyways Shidoshi?

Correct. And they said PayPal only because the CC it was bought on is stolen.

Many have been having their scam buy's shipped to neighboring Benin, which is fairly lawless when it comes to this sort of thing, even more so than Nigeria. Chris Hansen investigated this very thing on To Catch an ID Thief. The circumstances are way different on the cases on the show, but the stolen CC buys from that region, and the strangeness about shipping and payment are about the same. But check it out. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17938789/
