I've heard this is really good but I missed it at the theatres. I'll be picking up the DVD probably.
"Our sun is dying. Mankind faces extinction. Seven years ago the Icarus project sent a mission to restart the sun but that mission was lost before it reached the star. Sixteen months ago, I, Robert Capa, and a crew of seven left earth frozen in a solar winter. Our payload a stellar bomb with a mass equivalent to Manhattan Island. Our purpose to create a star within a star."
Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) takes a true stab at sci-fi with "Sunshine." Quote above sums up the movies core. In our not too distant pseudo-future, the sun is giving way and is dying. Earths first attempt to reignite it, the Icarus I, has not been heard from in many years. Their last hope is The Icarus II, manned by a group of scientists and astronaughts including Capa (Cilian Murphy) the physisist, Mace (Chris Evans) 3rd in Command, and Cassie (Rose Byrne) Icarus II's Manual Pilot.
Visually spectacular, intense, and closterphobic (and thankfully stays AWAY from the shaky cam), with a subtle yet appropriate scoring. The CG used in this film was very believeable, and emphasized the beauty of the apocalyptic dying sun, and world they sought to save. Visuals aside, the story is very character driven, and story never leaves the ship, allowing you to feel the true long term isolation the crewmembers go through. The film constantly questions the value of a human life for a greater good. The story holds up (besides a few scientific faults), but does have its flaws.
Overall, very recommended.
Read no further untill you've seen the film.
Overall i left very impressed with what i saw, but i felt the "Sun Zombie" or Pinbacker, the 1st in command of Icarus I, was very tacked on. I loved the film as mans attempt to battle a different nature, a nature outside of earth, a nature they still knew nothing about. Pinbacker just gave me a vibe of "28 lightyears later" where some abnormal being had to come fuck shit up. Personally if he wasnt some Sun Zombie with seeminly supernatural powers, and really was just a turned insane Scientist after being 7+ years alone in space would have kept a whole feeling of realism that the movie strived for. I for one was glad Icarus didnt pull a Space Odyssey and start doing the killing, i was afraid it was going to.

Its very limited in release, but still out there for at least two more weeks. Maybe some more indie theaters around you still carry it.

Absolutely recommended, catch it in the theaters. The panoramic sun shots are not going to be the same on a TV.

Simply excellent flick. I'm an amateur sci-fi writer, and I personally found the story incredibly beautiful. I'd say the first 3/4 of this movie are almost utterly perfect. Near the end, I came across a few negatives shared with the original post, but even still the entire package was incredibly well done: a fantastic, thought provoking concept, well written, and extremely well executed. The visuals, the concept, the struggle: all poetic and utterly humane. Exactly what good sci-fi should be. For fans of 2001 and The Fountain. Totally recommended.
PS. B-Ri:
What were the scientific faults you found with the film? I found it somewhat well done and pretty tight in that department.

My chief complaint was that the film was only 100 min long. I could have easily stayed with the story another half hour to hour. This is one of the most original and interesting movies I had seen in some time. The one thing that really stood out was the score and the use of distorting it and the visuals when necessary.
Was Pinbacker really supernatural? I only saw it once, so I may be wrong, but I didn't see anything he could have done that was beyond human. He was badly burnt and jetted around, but I figured everyone's perception was screwy due to being that close to the sun and panicking.

about pinbacker, well, he did punch through glass walls (the earth room to grab the wrong guy before whatsherbitch stabbed him), and at the end when he lifted Capa by the neck with ease, how he was able to withstand the force of the sun in the observation room, ect. He had some supernatural-tendancies but the way he was portrayed it was more towards that way then a man gone mad and burned

I got the feeling he was more insane than supernatural. Being alone for 7 years, combined with what addicting qualities we saw that the sunlight could have, plus all his religious talk.
Though his character was my biggest complaint. He brought the focus away from traditional sci-fi by adding some insane, human evil to the mix, almost giving the film's tone a horror twist. I preferred the more strict sci-fi conflict of the beginning. Still though, totally top notch piece.
