Thread: Gattaca

  1. Gattaca

This movie was on last night at 4 in the morning on Scifi channel, and this sure beat watching infomercials.

I love this film's concept of a society based on gentic engineering.

Every little aspect of your life is descided from birth, be it what you look like or what job you will have. It's sort of a cautionary tale about the dangers of genetics if we allow ourselves to become to dependant on it.

This is the story of man who was born out of the system, and is therefore ineligible to become a proper member of society and fullfill his dream of becoming an astronaught. Not content with staying on bottom rung of the social ladder, he finds a man who can give him a new identity, but this comes at a price, for this is a society built on genes, and he must find a way to conceal his invaild and worthless self.

    Great stuff.

One scene in particular which I felt really put everything into perspective was the one containing the piano player. When he finishes playing, he takes off his gloves and tosses them out to the audience. Uma Thermon (sp?) obtains one and puts it on her hand, and one of the fingers are empty. At first glance it looks as if she did not put the glove on right, but in the next scene Ethan Hawk's character is looking at a poster of the piano player, in which you can see that he has six fingers on each hand. As they discuss this, Uma Thermon says: "That piece can only be played with six fingers."

It's amazing that a society would engineer a baby at birth with this obvious abnormality just for the sake of being a better piano player.

Anyway, this is an excellent film and I highly recommend you go out and see it.

  2. Gattaca is one of my favorite films of all time. I've got a huge poster of it right above my bed. "there is no gene for the human spirit"

Anyways, its worth noting how beautiful this film is. It takes place in the future which is both extrememly sterile, but also beautiful. Gattaca is one of those rare films that makes you feel good about humanity, but at the same time its not sappy and overemotional. Great acting as well, although I'm a bit biased becaue Ethan is my favorite actor.

Fun fact: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman are married, and also starred together in "Tape"
