1. I think that Sonic should always be the focus, meaning having at least 50% of the game to himself.
2. Shadow would be a great additional/alternative character.
3. Tails should be available as a second player, just like the old Genesis Sonics, and SA 1.
4. Knuckles is a problem. I thought his treasure hunting levels were okay, but the system for finding them is flawed. If they can find a way to make it more intuitive (like an actual map, metal detector device or some other machine), therefore making it more fun, then by all means do it. If not, then change his gameplay. I don't think we need another player that plays like Sonic, yet his fists are his strength. (I don't know why, but a redesigned Beat-em-up with Knuckles having to protect Amy just poped in my head!) Find something else to do based on that, or just make him a background character.
5. Sonic needs a woman. I know that some game storylines are ruined by romance, but Sonic is old enough to get some IMHO. At least a character like Rouge the Bat, maybe a bad guy who's a love interest or something. No more of this Amy Rose flirtation. She'd be better off with Tails at this point.
Other than these things, I can't wait for this new Sonic. I loved all of them, including the Adventure series to this point. My favorite would have to be Sonic 3 & Knuckles, just because of the awesome scope of it all. That and looking around using the debug in Sonic 3 and seeing so many places where you couldn't go, since they didn't let you play as Knuckles yet.
About which system, though, I think it would be best to have this one be multiplatform. Sonic could make Sega A LOT of money. He's almost synonymous with the name Sega. Why limit your potential profits by making your most lucrative product exclusive to one console? Yeah, say what you want about the quality of the game diminishing based on the lowest common denominator (i.e. PS2), or a bad port, but this is in Sega's best interests. And since they would be developed at the same time, bad ports would not be an issue. I think Sonic Team has enough people and talent to handle such an undertaking.
