Most of the fines came in his first 2 years in the League (sans the the Pittman incident).
This year, the first in which he was a true free safety - he dominated.
Despite all of that shit in his past, he was a Pro Bowl Alternate in '05, Pro Bowler in '06, and was on pace to reach the Pro Bowl again in '07. Given the fact that Pro Bowlers are selected by fans, coaches, and players, I'd say he had the respect of a lot of people for what he did on the field.
