Thread: Official Car Thread :: Vol 2 :: Now with More Bikes!

  1. What the hell are frame sliders?

  2. My insurance when I first got the 250 was about $350 a year for comprehensive, not collision. Covers theft and vandalism, doesn't cover me crashing. It's come in handy.

Frame sliders are big plastic nubs that protect more expensive parts from hitting the ground if the bike falls over.

  3. #2123
My insurance is about $300/year for comprehensive and liability. If I crash the bike and need a replacement, it will either be more expensive to report it in the long run (assuming that I'm not hurt), or I'll be in the ICU, and don't care much about the motorcycle anyway.

  4. So Yeller, when we going riding?

  5. Maybe January! I am super new, so the game plan right now is "being utterly cautious and avoiding death by going very slow". I don't think I've been past third gear yet.

Riding around Pot Hill has been an education so far! The hills are all at a reaaaalllyyyy steep incline, so I'm having to learn stopping and starting on hills right off the bat (rear brake! rear break!).

My first parking-on-a-hill experience was really tough! I live on a damn near seventy degree hill. Almost dropped the bike, parked it, went inside. Immediately pulled out one of my motorcycle books to figure out why that was so goddamn hard... realized I had parked BACKWARDS. Luckily, my motorcycle expert neighbor was visiting and helped me re-park it, as I had no idea how to fix it myself. Cue morning: I don't know how to start on a hill! A few stall-outs later I'm rolling myself down the hill to the flat road, then it's easy-goings. But now I need to solve this hill problem.

  6. I can't live in San Francisco. I don't want to deal with hills.

  9. Still alive pussssyyyyyyy

PS downhills in the city are really fun! No throttle, just clutch & brakes!

It's raining and I have a cold, so no riding today.

Sounds good You should try a ride down Highway 1 (south) and see how you do, get to Half Moon Bay.

Funny you mention starting on a hill. I did the MSF course and felt pretty confident, then went to pick up my bike from the dealer and they're on a slight hill. I stalled the bike probably 20 times trying to take off from the curb. The guy that sold me the bike was probably certain I was going to kill myself. But I didn't.

As for parking on hills, always have the back of the bike pointing downhill. If the front of the bike is pointing downhill you're gonna have a fun time getting away from the curb.
