Conan Movie Finds Distributor, Writers and a Possible Way Past the Strike

Behold a ray of light for those of you awaiting any word on the progress of that new Conan movie that’s in development. According to Variety movie studio Lionsgate has stepped up and agreed to distribute the Conan picture across North America. In showbiz talk that’s a sign of confidence that the studio believes there’s money to be made showing the Cimmarian’s next screen adventure to American and Canadian audiences.
The second piece of good news is that a writing team has been selected to work on the screenplay. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (writers on Sahara, A Sound of Thunder and the forever trapped in development hell Cowboys & Aliens) will earn their next paycheck penning the new Conan screenplay. The only downside is that Oppenheimer and Donnelly won’t be able to get working on the script until after the Writers Guild of America strike is over. Or maybe not…
It turns out that the WGA is interested in making a deal with the Conan production companies, Millennium Films and Nu Image, that would allow Donnelly and Oppenheimer to start work sooner rather than later. “It’s a possibility, though I haven’t studied it enough to make a final decision,” producer Avi Lerner informed Variety. “The whole strike is stupid, in my opinion. They approached us, indirectly, to make some kind of deal, and we are looking at it.”
The WGA has already made two separate deals with movie studios that allow writers to go back to work on the projects for United Artists and The Weinstein Company. According to the grape vine the WGA is also in secret negotiations to do the same with Lionsgate but this is the first that I’ve heard of the Guild keen on making a deal for a lone movie project. I guess this is the way that the WGA wants to put pressure on the rest of Hollywood to get to a compromise sooner rather than later.
Everyone working on this Conan film is anticipating that the movie’s budget will finally tally in at around $100 million dollars.
