If you are running XP you can force very high quite easily, just google it.
The DX10 effect can run in DX9, too. See nameless one's post above.

ha! I'm sporting a x1800xt right now and the Crysis demo laughed at it. I ordered a evga 8800gt superclocked and while its back ordered I may get next week. I'll play Crysis then. I'll take advantage of that circuit city gift card deal.

It's not quite the same thing- some of the DX9 effects are more subtle than the DX10 version. For example the motion blur in dx10 looks a little cooler than the dx9 rendition, but dx10 is not a giant leap foward (certainly not worth the 20% hit in performance). The only other thing I noticed was depth of field, but to be honest I had to really look for it. You can check out tweakguides for a more detailed comparison. They mention other things like shader and lighting, but I couldn't really see it.

I can't beleive the x1800 had it listed under the recommended specs- I couldn't even get decent frame rates at 1024X768 with the details turned down. This game is highly GPU dependent, and if you have pretty much any dual core you can upgrade to a 8800GT and get very good frame rates

Looking at the side-by-side on tweakguides, I honestly cannot see the difference, even opening them full-screen and switching back and forth. Certainly nothing worth the apparent 25% frame his the number in the corner is indicating.

  5. i was reading legion hardware's article on crysis and it seems like you get a 15% increase by going the 64 bit route. Not that I'd install vista 64 just for this game, but I don't think I've seen a game get a boost from going 64 bit

  6. I've played through the demo several more times since I initially tried it. I'm really hyped about this game.

Gamespot's review is more positive than 1up's, and goes into some detail on the multplayer (useful info for those of us not in the beta).

  7. I finally got around to installing my evga 8800 gt SSC and it runs everything perfect on high... i just switched the config files to play it at very high, and I'm hoping it stays steady. What an awesome card.

  8. This game kicks serious ass. Multiplayer looks interesting, too, although I'm not that great at Counterstrike-type games.

I'm running this on a dual-core Intel with EVGA 8800 GTS and 2 GB RAM, and I get between 30-60 FPS on mostly high settings. Turning shaders and shadows down to medium yields decent performance improvements without sacrificing a lot of visual quality.

  9. So yeah, word from... pretty much everywhere is that this, like FarCry, goes to hell around two thirds of the way in and doesn't come back. It's a shame, really, but I can't say I'm too surprised.

Still, here's hoping the first two thirds are good enough to make up for it. Either way I'll find out when I upgrade my computer in a month or so.

  10. I've heard it gets really different 2/3 through, but not neccessarily worse. 1up said the change was disappointing since you lose the sandbox element, Gamespot said it was great, and action packed. I'd rather decide for myself.
