When did I ever say it wasn't good? Blade Runner and Robocop are pretty dated too. And great.

My point is just that Total Recall would be a different movie if it was made today, and different in this case is preferable to trying to recapture a movie that already works how it is.

Total Recall already has the perfect story. You're left guessing if what had happened was a fabrication from Recall, or really happened. How exactly could you change the storyline to make it any better?

Planet of the Apes pretty much followed the original storyline (except for a change of ending), but the overall movie sucked in comparison to the original. No amount of special effects could make it a better movie.

Pretty much all the specifics between when he goes to Rekal and when he returns could be completely changed without drastically altering the meaning or spirit of the story. There's a ton of room for a different take, especially because most of that stuff was never in the original story.

I could totally see a good Total Recall remake/alternate interpretation coming from say, a David Cronenberg, or someone of that skill set.

  5. David Lynch, imvmho.

You know, I said this just because it seemed like the perfect choice to me, but I read today that he was actually attached to direct the original for over a year and got replaced because of fights with the producers.

This makes me sad. I love Total Recall, but a Cronenberg version could have been amazing.

  7. The only Cronenberg movies I've seen are eXistenZ and The Fly. They're both good, but I can't see him doing a better job than what Paul Verhoeven did with Total Recall.

I think we watched different total recall's if you thought it could have been amazing.
