I'm sure Konami used Metroid as inspiration but I think rip off is too strong a phrase since Nintendo didn't invent that type of game.
You can't say that SotN isn't a rip off of Super Metroid I don't care who started the genre. I mean, look at the save rooms. The only difference is it's a coffin. The only game I ever heard Iga mention in interviews about SotN was Super Metroid.

I'm not denying Super Metroid influenced SotN but that's not the same as being a rip off. SotN has a bunch of aspects not from Metroid like its look and the RPG elements.
I tend to restrict using the term rip off to obvious clones since nearly every game on the market has previous games it resembles.
