Thread: Games that shouldn't be possible on their system

  1. Some games perhaps should not be counted because of add-on RAM carts (saturn) or on-board cartridge chips (many Famicom and SuperNES/Fami carts).

    Virtua Fighter 2 (SS)

Adventures of Batman and Robin (Gen)- 2.5D????

Resident Evil 2 (N64)- at the time, I was shocked

Ehrgeiz (PSX)- yes, I think it looks too damn good to be produced by PS hardware.

Tobal 2 (PSX)- At the time, it seemed like the pinnacle...

Mortal Kombat II (SNES)- I rented the Genny version first...then I saw and heard the SNES version and was shocked.

    Donkey Kong (Colecovision)- Damn suprising...

  2. I remember seeing Colecovision Donkey Kong after only playing 2600 Donkey Kong. Yes, it was damn surprising.

I think RAM upgrads and mapper chips are OK. It's all part of milking the technology, and it's especially transparent when it's a chip inside the cart. How about Virtua Racing on the Genny? $100 at the time of release if I remember correctly due to it's chip....

Alone in the Dark on GBC comes to mind.... The game itself may or may not suck, but those are GBA calibur still shots, and the entire game is made of them.

Dragon's Lair on GBC is impressive as well.

I'm still shcoked to this day by the quality of the SNES port of MK2. I swear, I think smoke comes out of the SNES when it's running the game, but somehow it doesn't explode. Really well done.

I read on a few websites that some guys ported the first level of Quake to the GBA as a test and actually got it to run smoothly...damn.

Dolemite, the Bad-Ass King of all Pimps and Hustlers
Gymkata: I mean look at da lil playah woblin his way into our hearts in the sig awwwwwww

  4. Speaking of smoking SNESs, how about that port of Smash TV? Where's the slowdown? I mean, the screen is littered with more baddies than I can count, my bullets are flying everywhere, chunks are splattering to and fro, and it never slows down! I still have no idea how they made that game work.

And yeah, that SNES MKII makes my eyes google too. Managed to sell a few SNESs as well.

  5. Anyone mentioned Yoshi's Island yet?
The best games for a systems launch usually surprise me, like when I first seen Ridge Racer after I fired it up, or seeing Mario 64 in motion for the first time at a game store, or seeing Sonic Adventure for the first time at EB. The first commercial I seen for the Saturn amazed me, also the FF7 commercial when I first seen it.

  6. Genesis:
    Gunstar Heroes
    Panorama Cotton
    Adventures of Batman and Robin
    Flashback
    Duke Nukem 3D

    SNES:
    Tales of Phantasia (The music!)
    Star Ocean (The music again!)
    Yoshi's Island

    MSX
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (It looked like a genesis game!)

    GBA
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

    Lynx:
    Blue Lightning
    Electrocop
    STUN Runner
    Hard Drivin
    Battlewheels
    CyberVirus

    Vectrex:
    Web Warp

  7. Playing against Cerebus Alpha in Mischief Makers on the N64 floored me, I actually didn't even fight him when I first got to him, I just watched, my jaw open, in sheer amazment at what I was seeing.

Mario 64 was incredible the first time I watched that in motion, same goes Zelda 64.

Funnily enough, I was throughly underwhelmed when I first saw Soul Calibur in motion, I was expecting something more after the screenshots and hype, I guess, but it just never really "did it" for me. However, to this day, I've been in Funcoland when they have it running on their DC hookup and people will come in, watch it for a minute, and ask what that is and when it's coming out. When informed that it's a first-gen DC game, they're always shocked. Funny stuff for me to watch.

[Edit] Oh yes, and Starfox. I certainly wasn't expecting that on the SNES... Wow.

  8. Why does everybody keep putting Gunstar Heros? Yes, it is a ton of fun, but I don't see what it does technically that stands out.

Tons of sprites on-screen and fast gameplay.

Plenty of effects such as the core, Black's dice maze, the plane you fight on and background, the multi-jointed bosses. *-neo

I think alot of it has do with the style, some of the graphics may not be the most amazing, but they are used in a way that you have to appreciate the insane minds behind it.
