GTFO
It's statistically true. Don't just call me dumb, let's argue about it.
There are plenty of "real" Rangers fans. More than the Devils + Islanders combined, easily. Problem is the only seats that "real fans" can afford are what used to be the "blue seats" and those have been sold out for years. Anything down below is bought and paid for by corporations and routinely given away, etc...
The "real" fans were the ones who were upset that Brian Leetch wasn't retained, that Guy Lafleur and Dionne ever wore the uniform and are the ones who still chant "Potvin Sucks" 20 years later at current Rangers games.
Listen to a broadcast, you'll pick it up in the background once in a while.
I'll buy that. It's a shame too that you have to go to the obstructed view nose bleed seats in many arenas to find the people who truly love the game.
There are ___ franchises who've never won a single championship.
There are ___ franchises that sell out EVERY home game.
There are 6 "original six" franchises, which leaves 20+ that aren't one.
If you can make a statement like "the Rangers are (possibly) the worst franchise in sports", then you are D-U-M-B.
Being an original six franchise or selling out has nothing to do with being a great franchise, but I agree that the Rangers are far from the worst in the NHL, let alone all of sports.
Being an original franchise has everything to do with being a great franchise, if only for history's sake alone. And selling out every game DOES mean something, even if it's not the hardcore fans that are in most of the seats. Take a look at the Knicks - a historic franchise in its own right and the building is half empty and no one cares. Even when the Rangers were at their worst, they were selling out nearly every game, every year, every time. There's always interest in MSG and the Rangers.
They were the worst original franchise though. Look at their record.
I'm not talking about interest, I'm talking about being a shitty franchise. The Bills sell out every year, but they are huge failures. I'd argue the Bills aren't even as bad as the Rags though. The Rags have dealt with a lot of horrible management, and in the Original Six era they didn't do well at all.
Fuck the completely unwarranted original six arrogance. Detroit is the only one that is a top 5 franchise at this point anyway. Dallas didn't join the NFL until 1960, but anyone who says they aren't the most important franchise to the league is full of shit.
Selling out means nothing. Revenue matters, but if you can optimize revenue without selling every ticket, you should.
Winning is the only measurement for franchise success, unless they are going bankrupt.
