Actually, while not nearly as bad as slavery was, Irish people were more or less forced into indentured servitude for a period of seven years upon arriving here in the early days of this country. Trouble is that they looked like every other white person in this country so they could easily run away and start somewhere else (barring the accent giving them away).
For a period, the early Americans tried enslaving the Native American tribes, but that didn't go over so well. Ultimately, Africans were imported as slaves because they were easy to keep track of and had hardier constitutions.
As for the Irish not being stripped of their culture? Might I suggest you learn some world history before thinking that black people are unique in being oppressed by others. The British and the Irish were at each other's throats for
centuries before the first Europeans even set foot on these lands.
Epithets like "mick" and "paddy" were coined over there long before "nigger" came into existence. Fact is, the history of the Irish in Europe reads like the history of black people in this country.
The key difference? Black people still behave like victims.
Seriously, this country was built on the backs of black people. Many innovations in science, medicine and technology were pioneered by black people. Even today, through music and culture, black people hold more power in their grasp than anyone else on the damned planet.
Hip-hop is everywhere, our ideas and way of life is mimicked by many. Yet for all the power we hold, we squander it playing the 40 acres and a mule bit over and over and over again. Stuck in the victim role that our parents handed down to us, we fail repeatedly to ascend to the greatness that is ours by birthright because we won't let the past die.
At this stage, no one is keeping us down but us. Crabs in a bucket IMHO.
All that said, I'm still naming my first born daughter, Batia. Fuck all you cracka' ass mutha fuckas'.
