Hit the nail on the head with Matrix. Love the film but it's just a well done Shaw Bros-esque film with well-hidden wirework. The plotline is ganked from every Japanese sci-fi since the 1970s...
Just because a film has artistic merit does not make it pretentious.. though it can be argued that many films that some consider high art are to others pretentious. I'm thinking of directors such as Wong Kar Wai... I love his stuff, but others may say there is no real depth there...
I'd say Dogma is pretentious, but not Clerks... especially not Clerks II.
I love French films, being a huge fan of the new wave... so I will check this out.
Too bad netflix has none of this director's films... so I'll have to find another way to hunt them down...
