Holy animal, what a movie! Really liked it, one of the best movies in any genre I've seen in awhile.
It was FANTASTIC. One of the best films I've seen in quite a while. Especially this being a horror film, genre not known for best acting and storytelling. And given Steven Kings track record at the cinema (while I do enjoy a lot of his book adaptations), most people expect failure.
I love the original novel, and this movie WAS had I imagined and filmed it. Well, aside for last 10 or so minutes when they took liberties to give us more in your face ending I guess. Not to say that ending we got was bad, it was quite the opposite. You got to have balls to have such bleak finale in big Hollywood production and I respect Darabont for doing so.
I do prefer, there is Hope of original King's writing, and them driving into the Mist following the words they thought they heard on the radio. But thats me. Also, they never went to their home in the book, there were trees in the way. Another thing that played out better in the book.
Thomas Jane did well, as hero, except some unfortunate over-acting in the end. Some of the screaming looked more strained and even bit laughable, instead of tragic.
MG Harden played excellent god warrior bitch, and god, it felt so great when she got what was coming.
I really liked guy who played Ollie. Great part and delivery. It was really sad to see him go.
FX and Gore were top notch. Sure some of the things looked fakey, especially flying dino-bird on fire inside the store, but most of monsters had great designs. Loved tentacle monster, fresh look of spiders and giant lobster/mantis in the mist. Walking giant at the end, was another surprise.
I am looking forward seeing it again, in black and white version, to see if that works even better, given more classic old school feel.
I am sad I couldn't catch it in theaters last fall, just didn't worked out. But I had great time tonight with it, and left feeling both sad and excited.

Heres my thoughts on the movie.
I hate spiders. More so NOW than before this movie.
BTW Loved this movie.

I picked up the 2-disc set. The special features are pretty cool. Disc 2 has the entire film in black and white, which is kinda weird (and not as effective, imo). But the deleted scenes and making-ofs are great. I'm looking forward to listening to the director's commentary track as well.
There's also a section about the movie poster artist that did all the paintings seen in the first scene of the movie as well. Turns out this super-talented guy has been doing movie posters for years and is responsible for so many that we've all seen countless times. It's a nice little tribute.

I never read any of the Dark Tower books. I thought it was a Clint Eastwood poster until someone clued me in.

Dark Tower series is awesome. Loved the poster homage with Roland and The Rose.
