Thread: No Country for Old Men

  1. I need to see this. Miller's Crossing is in my top ten all time. I don't always like what the Coens make, but I always appreciate it.

See I'm a sucker for everything Coen Brothers. It's something about the acting in the movies and their direction that have always hit the right note with me and really made me enjoy their movies. Hell, I even enjoyed 2 of their movies people regard as pure crap simply because of the presence of their trademark style of humor (The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty). But I'm definitely with you on their best movie being Millers Crossing, I loved EVERYTHING about that film. With Raising Arizona and Blood Simple being in a close second.

  3. I really, really want to see this but by the time I get home for Christmas it will be out of theaters, meaning I have to wait until Janurary to see it in theaters here. Lame.

McCarthy is a writer that I'm honestly on the fence about. All the Pretty Horses was fairly boring and I felt that The Road was too repetitive (hunger, salvation, catastrophe, hunger, salvation, catastrophe, repeat) but I suppose that's sort of the point, I'm not going to argue with a Pulitzer.

But I could tell just by the trailer this summer that this movie was going to be great, I really hope it doesn't let me down.

As for the Coens, I haven't seen all of their "best" movies (okay, I just haven't seen Millers Crossing and Barton Fink) but I know by Blood Simple and Fargo that they can handle tension, cruelty, and crime. It's a perfect match really.

I too love almost everything they do, but I have to say, Blood Simple is easily their worst film. It's borderline unwatchable with plastic, unlikable characters and none of their usual clever dialog. Just an ugly, unpleasant piece of cinema I had to force myself to sit through. I wouldn't put Barton Fink or Miller's Crossing way high on the list either, though I enjoy them.

Fargo, Lebowski, and The Man Who Wasn't There are my favorites, with Raising Arizona and O Brother not far behind.

  5. Different strokes for different folks. I agree with you on Barton Fink, I really enjoyed it, but I don't think it's one of their best films. I actually can't name a Coen Brothers movie I didn't enjoy, so it's tough to rank them for me from best to worst since they all rank up there as fantastic movies in my book.

I just hope No Country for Old Men meets/exceeds Fargo as far as suspense goes, if it does it will be top notch in my book. And from everything I have read about it it should easily meet my expectations.

  6. This was spectacular, but the ending seems to be splitting people. I loved it, but it's much more important thematically than narratively.

  7. Yeah, i really need to see it again and would be happy to. It was late, i was tired, i wasn't paying attention to the talkin', expecting something else to happen.
    Donk

  8. I heard there were a bunch of people who were confused after seeing it, so I was waiting for something confusing to come along...

Anyway I thought it was great. Would download again.

  9. Finally saw this today.

It's a very unconventional ending. My friend compared it to the Sopranos ending, but it's really not in that it DOES wrap up the story and characters, it just does it in a way that focuses exclusively on the characters and doesn't have the usual climactic struggle between good and evil where everyone exhales afterwards and we all feel relieved.

  10. This movie is so well made it's fucking crazy. The cinematography and direction is simply of the highest caliber. The sound (lack of it actually) is remarkably well done and the entire cast rules. A very Cormac ending, I wasn't too surprised at how it ended. The movie never holds your hand, it lets you absorb and think about it. More people need to go see this, it should be doing twice as well as it is right now.
